Top TipsTrump testifies in civil caseFormer President Donald Trump took the stand in his New York civil fraud trial yesterday, clashing with the judge during several hours of contentious testimony. State Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron threatened to dismiss Trump at one point, telling him to answer questions rather than launch into speeches similar to his campaign rallies. Engoron also asked Trump’s attorney, Christopher Kise, to control Trump’s behavior. Trump dismissed the allegations levied by New York Attorney General Leticia James and called the trial a witch hunt. James, who was present in the courtroom, is suing Trump for $250M and seeking to bar him from doing business in the state. Trump was pressed on the valuation of his real estate holdings by prosecutors, who argued he inflated the value of assets like Trump Tower to obtain better rates from banks. Trump conceded his Trump Organization made valuation errors, but blamed banks for a lack of due diligence. |

Putin to run againRussia President Vladimir Putin is expected to seek reelection next March, a move that will allow him to hold power until at least 2030. Russian presidents are elected to six-year terms and Putin is unlikely to face a serious challenge. Putin’s approval rating is 80% despite Russia’s war with Ukraine and a coup attempt by now-deceased mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in June. Putin benefits from the support of state media while almost all public dissent is stifled. His chief political rival, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, is serving a decades-long prison sentence after a series of convictions that have been widely criticized by the world community. Putin, 71, has served as Russia’s president or prime minister since 1999. He has been president since 2012. He was originally restricted to two consecutive presidential terms, but a 2020 referendum allows him to run next year and again in 2030. |

Israel continues war in GazaIsrael said its military forces encircled Gaza City as it continues its war against Hamas. The move effectively splits Gaza in half; Israeli officials say it will make it more difficult for the militant group to control the enclave. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken completed a sprint through the Middle East, meeting with Turkey yesterday following visits with Iraq, Jordan and Palestine as President Joe Biden and his administration try to prevent a larger regional conflict. Biden discussed tactical pauses in fighting with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire despite increasing domestic and foreign pressure. Blinken said the U.S. is working with Israel on the logistics of such pauses. Over 10K people have lost their lives since fighting began, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. Jordan air-dropped medical aid to a Gaza field hospital yesterday; prior aid has been trucked in over the enclave’s border with Egypt. |
