GOP presidential debate tonight

Five Republican candidates qualified for the party’s third presidential debate tonight in Miami (8 p.m. ET, NBC). Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former UN Ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott will participate.

Former President Donald Trump will skip the debate. Trump, who holds sizable leads in recent national and early-voting state primary polls, will instead have a rally in the nearby city of Hialeah. He did not attend the first two debates held earlier this year.

DeSantis will debate two days after receiving an endorsement from Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, whose state’s caucus is the first primary contest. He remains second to Trump in most national and state polls. But Haley has risen to third place in many recent polls and is close to DeSantis.

Portugal prime minister resigns

Antonio Costa resigned as Portugal's prime minister yesterday following a police raid of his home related to a corruption probe. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has accepted Costa's resignation, but when he will exit office remains unclear.

Authorities are investigating alleged wrongdoing connected to lithium mining projects and a hydrogen energy plant. Costa's chief of staff, Vitor Escaria, adviser Diogo Lacerda and infrastructure minister Joao Galamba were also identified as subjects of the investigation. Costa said he did nothing wrong during a televised speech and pledged to cooperate with the investigation.

Costa has been in office since 2015. His Socialist Party won majority government control in a snap election last year; Costa led a coalition government prior. Rebelo de Sousa will meet with leaders from Costa's party, as well as the Social Democratic Party, today. He can allow the majority party to continue governance with a new prime minister or dissolve the government and call for an election.

Israel open to war pauses

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will not accept a ceasefire in the war with Hamas unless all hostages in Gaza are freed, but he will consider brief pauses to facilitate humanitarian aid or to allow those held captive to flee the enclave.

Netanyahu made his comments after President Joe Biden raised the possibility of tactical halts. Israel Defense Forces said it has struck 14,000 terrorist targets since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack started the conflict. The IDF said it is operating in Gaza City after encircling it, but it is not clear how far into the city troops have moved.

Netanyahu said Israel would assume overall security responsibility for Gaza indefinitely once the war ends. But Israel does not plan to occupy long-term, according to diplomat Mark Regev; he said it intends to defeat Hamas and then assist Gazans in self-governance with the support of Arab nations in the region.
