Your Daily Brief

November 13th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Monday! Now may be a good time for Americans living in the southern parts of the country to think about getting a tool they rarely need -- a snow shovel. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released its winter snowfall predictions and meteorologists believe the South and Great Plains regions could see more snowfall than typical due to El Nino. The tropical weather pattern could also lead to less snow in traditionally hard-hit areas like New England.

Iceland volcano may erupt

Iceland has declared a state of emergency as it braces for a volcanic eruption in the southwestern part of the island nation following thousands of earthquakes over the weekend.

  • Evacuation order: Some residents of Grindavik, a small fishing village, briefly returned home yesterday to gather essential personal items and pets after an evacuation order went into effect Friday. Scientists believe an eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in or near the town is imminent due to seismic activity. Homes and roads have already suffered significant damage due to earthquakes.
  •
  • Disaster feared: Iceland has over 30 active volcanic systems, the most of any European country. Experts believe Grindavik could be destroyed if there is an eruption. The famed Blue Lagoon resort is in the town; a power plant in the area provides electricity and water to 30,000 people and a U.S. Navy radio transmitter facility is nearby.
  •
  • Elsewhere: There is also growing concern about a dormant volcano in Italy; there has been an increase in seismic activity detected near Naples.

Gaza humanitarian crisis continues

Israel said yesterday it opened a humanitarian corridor outside Gaza’s largest hospital amid continued calls and concerns about medical facilities inside the enclave during the war with Hamas.

  • Hospitals failing: Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, and Al-Quds, its second-largest, have ceased operations due to a lack of electricity and supplies as airstrikes continue, according to Gaza officials. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas refused fuel for Al-Shifa and alleged the militant group is using the hospital as a command post, jeopardizing patients. Israel said it will evacuate babies at the hospital and permit civilians to flee. Hamas has denied all Israeli claims. Over 800 Gazans were evacuated into Egypt yesterday through the Rafah crossing.
  •
  • Protests: Major cities across the globe again saw large pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations over the weekend, including in London, New York and Paris.
  •
  • Analysis: The phrase From the river to the sea has become a flashpoint in the discourse surrounding the conflict. What do the words mean? The Associated Press reports that depends on the storytellers and the audience.

Johnson reveals shutdown strategy

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson wants to avoid a U.S. Government shutdown with a two-step plan, but the proposal has received bipartisan pushback.

  • Johnson’s pitch: The Louisiana Rep. wants to extend government funding for some programs until mid-January while others would be funded until early February. Legislators typically fund all programs under stopgap spending bills. The White House has come out against the plan and it would be unlikely to pass the Democratic-held Senate. And some conservative Republicans have panned the bills as too costly.
  •
  • Details: Johnson wants to fund agriculture, energy, housing, transportation and veterans programs through Jan. 19. Other agencies, including the Department of Defense and State Department, would be funded through Jan. 2. President Joe Biden’s funding requests related to the wars in Israel and Ukraine and the U.S.-Mexico border are not included.
  •
  • Time crunch: Congress must pass a continuing resolution, or agree on a budget, by Friday to avoid a shutdown. Johnson likely needs some House Democrats' support to pass any measures.
