Biden heralds productive Xi talks

President Joe Biden trumpeted "real progress" after yesterday's summit with China President Xi Jinping.

  • Face to face: Biden and Xi met for four hours at the Filoli estate in Woodside, California, after the leaders attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. It was the first time Biden and Xi have spoken in person in a year.
  •
  • The readout: Biden and Xi agreed to reinstate high-level military communications and work to reduce Chinese fentanyl shipments into the country. Biden and Xi discussed the Israel-Hamas and Ukraine-Russia wars, as the U.S. wants China to exert influence on Iran, North Korea and the Russians. Biden pledged to maintain the one-China policy, but did not elaborate much on what he discussed with Xi about Taiwan. Biden did say he expects China to refrain from interfering in Taiwan's upcoming elections.
  •
  • Dinner party: The Chinese leader did not hold a press conference, but told Biden he believes the world is big enough for both nations to succeed. Xi was scheduled to have dinner last night with Biden and American business leaders, including Tesla's Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Israel presents Hamas hospital proof

Israel recovered Hamas military equipment in a raid on Gaza's largest hospital, leading President Biden to say the militant group committed a war crime.

  • What was found: Israel said it discovered "military equipment" and "technological assets," distributing photos of weapons and promising more evidence Hamas used Al-Shifa as a command center. Hamas dismissed all Israel's claims as propaganda, but Biden supported them. Gaza officials say close to 200 people have died at the hospital, which has ceased normal operations.
  •
  • UN pressure: The United Nations' humanitarian agency called for a ceasefire while the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a series of humanitarian pauses in the war (the U.S. abstained in the vote). Qatar continued attempts to broker a temporary truce and hostage releases.
  •
  • Netanyahu challenged: Israel's opposition leader, Yair Lipid, called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign. Lipid said he was not calling for a snap election but that the ruling Likud Party should replace Netanyahu, claiming he had lost the nation's trust.

Ukraine notches key breakthrough

Ukraine said it has achieved a foothold on the east bank of the Dnieper River inside Russia-occupied territory as it continues its counteroffensive.

  • The significance: The river, near the Ukraine-held city of Kherson, is a natural battlefield barrier for Russia. If Ukraine can hold its position, it can push the frontline further and open new avenues to attack Crimea, which Russia has controlled since its illegal annexation in 2014.
  •
  • Russia responds: A Kremlin-installed local official confirmed Ukraine had crossed the river, but claimed it was taking heavy losses in a "fiery hell." Russia has been able to deploy troops elsewhere due to the river barrier, so it risks being outflanked if Ukraine sustains its success.
  •
  • Budget boost: Russia's State Duma approved a record budget for 2024 with a 25% increase in defense spending, interpreted as another move to shore up support for President Vladimir Putin before next year's elections; Putin is expected to seek another term and stay in power until at least 2030.

Eyewear has never looked so good

Sunglasses are overpriced.

At the most basic level, their job is to protect your eyes and make it easier for you to see. Most are made in the same handful of factories, with the same specs.

The only meaningful measure of a good pair of sunglasses is whether or not they have UV400 protection. This rating ensures that all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, including both UVA and UVB rays, are blocked out.

Everything else is just a luxury tax.

That’s why Knockaround sunglasses have become so popular. Priced under $50, and often under $30, all Knockaround shades feature UV400 protection

What’s more, they look great and they’re super durable.

From the traditional look of their Premiums and Fast Lanes, to crazy collaborations and reading glasses, Knockaround has something for everyone, for every time of year.

Shop now to get a pair for yourself, or a great gift for someone else.
