President Biden and First Lady visit Uvalde

On Sunday, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden arrived in Uvalde, Texas and visited Robb Elementary School, the site of the nation’s latest mass shooting last Tuesday which left nineteen children and two teachers dead.

The president’s trip to Uvalde came less than two weeks after he traveled to Buffalo, N.Y., where 10 people were killed in another premeditated mass shooting at a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood. After the Bidens walked along a row of photos of the victims at Robb Elementary in the Texas town, pausing and touching the images, the couple then attended Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. During his homily, Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller called children to sit in the front pews. The president and first lady also both stepped up to the front of the church to kneel and pray alongside other parishioners during the service.

Later in the day, the president and first lady met in private with families of victims and survivors as well as other members of the community, including paramedics, firefighters, mental-health services providers, and law-enforcement officials.

Landslides and floods in Brazil leave over 100 dead or missing

According to the Brazilian government, over 100 people are missing or confirmed dead in the northeastern part of the country from mudslides and floods caused by recent heavy rains.

56 people were confirmed dead and over 50 were missing in the state of Pernambuco, per Brazil’s Federal Civil Defense service, which is in charge of the country’s emergency management. One other individual was confirmed dead in the neighboring state of Alagoas. The Federal Civil Defense service also said that between the two states, over 6,000 people had fled their homes and arrived at aid stations designed by the government, and more than 7,000 were seeking shelter with friends and relatives.

Sunday’s flooding was the fourth of its kind in the past five months. In late December and early January, dozens lost their lives and tens of thousands were displaced after heavy rains in Bahia, another state in northeastern Brazil. At least 18 individuals died later in January from flooding in Sao Paulo, and in February, flooding and mudslides from torrential downpours killed over 230 people in Rio de Janeiro.

FDA investigating two brands of strawberries after possible Hepatitis A outbreak

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating two brands of organic strawberries sold at major chains such as Trader Joe’s and Walmart that may be linked to an outbreak of hepatitis A.

According to a statement from the FDA, a multistate outbreak of hepatitis A infections in the United States and Canada appears to be linked to organic strawberries carrying a FreshKampo or H-E-B label. The agency–who is conducting its investigation along with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention–said the products were sold at stores such as Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Aldi, Sprouts, WinCo Foods, H-E-B, Safeway, Kroger and Weis Markets. 12 people have been hospitalized so far, while a total of 17 have been sickened, per the FDA. In the statement given, the agency said the “traceback investigations show that cases in California, Minnesota, and Canada report having purchased fresh organic strawberries branded as FreshKampo or H-E-B prior to becoming ill.”

On top of saying “Do not eat, serve, or sell FreshKampo or HEB brand organic strawberries” purchased between March 5th and April 25th, the FDA also urged people who bought those brands of berries and froze them for later consumption to get rid of them immediately.
