At least 50 dead in a mass shooting at a Nigerian Catholic churchA mass shooting that unfolded at a Catholic church in the southwestern region of Nigeria on Sunday has left at least 50 people dead. Local police reported that at least four assailants stormed Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo during a Mass celebration taking place around 11:30 a.m. on Pentecost Sunday. Funmilayo Ibukun Odunlami, police spokesperson for Ondo state–the state where the shooting occurred–said that the gunmen shot at worshippers both inside and outside the church. Violent acts such as killings and kidnappings are more common in the northeast and center parts of Nigeria, which is home to a larger portion of the country’s Muslim population. Owo is known as a more peaceful part of the country compared to the northeastern and northwestern areas, which Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu reflected in a tweet, saying: “The vile & satanic attack is a calculated assault on the peace-loving people of Owo Kingdom who have enjoyed relative peace over the years.” In terms of casualty numbers, the shooting was the deadliest attack on a church in Nigeria and the first time a church had been attacked in Ondo state in recent years. As of Sunday night, no one had claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive was still unclear. |

Baby formula maker Abbott Nutrition restarts production at Michigan plantAbbott Nutrition—the baby formula maker whose plant shutdown led to a nationwide formula shortage—said on Saturday that it has resumed production at its Michigan facility after meeting requirements from the FDA. The baby formula manufacturer shut down its Sturgis, Michigan plant in February after four babies who ingested formula manufactured at the plant became sick with bacterial infections. Prior to the closure, formula supply in the United States was already strained. According to Datasembly, which tracks retail data, the plant’s closure compounded with pandemic supply issues caused out-of-stock rates for baby formula to reach roughly 74% at stores across the country for the week ending on May 28th. In response to the nationwide shortage, the Biden Administration enacted an emergency protocol dubbed “Operation Fly Formula,” which directed the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services to utilize the Defense Department’s commercial planes to import formula from overseas. The first batch of foreign formula was flown in on May 22nd. In a statement, Abbott Nutrition said consumers can expect to see EleCare and other specialty and metabolic formulas on shelves around June 20th, and said the company was “working hard” to restart production of Similac and other formulas. |

Rafael Nadal becomes oldest champion in French Open history
Rafael Nadal becomes oldest champion in French Open history Nadal's victory came two days after he turned 36, making him the oldest title winner in the history of the French Open–the second of the four Grand Slam tournaments (the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open), and the only one featuring clay tennis courts. Prior to Nadal’s Sunday victory, the oldest champion in French Open history was Andres Gimeno, who won in 1972 at age 34. After winning the match, Nadal revealed that he needed an injection to his left foot in order to be able to play, and that he had been receiving frequent injections over the past two weeks to numb the pain in his foot caused by Mueller-Weiss syndrome. As he addressed the crowd during the trophy ceremony, Nadal thanked his family and team, saying that without their support, he would have needed to “retire much before.” He then added, "I don't know what can happen in the future, but I'm going to keep fighting to try to keep going." |
