China says its Sky Eye telescope may have detected signs of alien civilizations

China claimed yesterday that its “Sky Eye” telescope may have picked up trace signals from a distant alien civilization, according to a report published (and then deleted) by Chinese scientists.

“Sky Eye” is the nickname for the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) located in southwest China's Guizhou province. With an aperture of 1,640 feet–or 500 meters–it is the world’s largest radio telescope.

According to a report published in Science and Technology Daily–the official newspaper of China's Ministry of Science and Technology–astronomers at Beijing Normal University have discovered "several cases of possible technological traces and extraterrestrial civilizations from outside the Earth" through the telescope. However, soon after it was published, the report was deleted from the Ministry of Science and Technology’s website for unknown reasons.

Speaking on the telescope’s findings, Zhang Tongjie, the head scientist at the China Extraterrestrial Civilization Research Group at Beijing Normal University, said, "These are several narrow-band electromagnetic signals different from the past, and the team is currently working on further investigation. The possibility that the suspicious signal is some kind of radio interference is also very high, and it needs to be further confirmed and ruled out. This may be a long process."

Federal Reserve raises interest rates by 0.75%

The Federal Reserve during its meeting yesterday raised interest rates by 0.75%, or 75 basis points.

Yesterday’s rate hike will increase the Fed’s benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 1.5% and 1.75%. It is the largest rate increase since 1994 and comes in tandem with the highest inflation levels the United States has seen in over 40 years. Last month, inflation as measured by the consumer price index rose year-over-year by 8.6%, and consumers have felt price pressures from a variety of goods from food to gas prices.

A statement the Fed released yesterday reads that “Inflation remains elevated, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic, higher energy prices, and broader price pressure.” It also shows that the rate increase was approved by all Federal Open Market Committee members except for Kansas City Fed President Esther George, who “preferred at this meeting to raise the target range for the federal funds rate by 0.5 percentage point.”

In an announcement, Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell signaled that the central bank will continue to raise rates by similar magnitudes throughout the end of the year, saying that “either a 50 basis point or a 75 basis point increase seems most likely” at its next meeting in July.

Buffalo supermarket shooter charged with 26 counts of hate crimes & firearms offense

The Justice Department filed hate crimes charges yesterday against Payton Gendron, the gunman who allegedly shot and killed 10 people in a racially-motivated attack at a Buffalo supermarket last month, according to officials.

Per Attorney General Merrick B. Garland–who announced the charges from Buffalo, New York–prosecutors in the Western District of New York charged Gendron with a total of 26 counts of hate crimes and firearms offenses. Some of the charges the 18-year-old faces carry the possibility of the death penalty.

According to the criminal complaint filed yesterday, Gendron “committed a mass shooting targeting Black people at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York. The mass shooting, which Gendron live-streamed on the Internet, resulted in the deaths of 10 Black people and injuries to one Black person and two Caucasian people. The complaint further alleges that Gendron’s motive for the mass shooting was to prevent Black people from replacing white people and eliminating the white race, and to inspire others to commit similar attacks.”

The charges that Gendron faces are: 10 counts of hate crimes resulting in death; three counts involving bodily injury and attempt to kill; 10 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder and in retaliation to a crime of violence, and three counts of use and discharge of a firearm during and in retaliation to a crime of violence.
