Golden State Warriors win the NBA Finals
The Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics in Game 6 last night to win the NBA Finals; it is the franchise’s fourth championship title in the last eight seasons.
Playing on Boston's home court at TD Garden, the game ended with a final score of 103-90. Afterward, Golden State point guard Steph Curry was unanimously named the Finals MVP by the 11 voting media members; it marks Curry’s first time winning the award.
Curry finished the game with 34 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and made 6 out of 11 total 3-point shots. Throughout the series, he averaged 31.2 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and shot 43.7% from 3-point range. On the Celtics’ side, Jaylen Brown put up 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in last night’s game.
This year’s title places the Warriors alongside the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers as the only franchises to win four titles in the span of eight years, and makes Golden State the second team in NBA history to win a championship on Boston's home court.
Abbott shuts down its Michigan production plant…again
Less than two weeks after restarting production of baby formula at its Sturgis, Michigan plant, Abbott has shut the facility down again due to flooding from thunderstorms.
Abbott had shut down the same plant in February after four babies who ingested formula manufactured at the facility became sick with bacterial infections, which exacerbated a shortage of baby formula in the United States. After resuming production on June 4th, Abbott announced the plant’s recent closure in a statement released Wednesday, citing flooding as the cause.
“Abbott has stopped production of its EleCare specialty formula that was underway to assess damage caused by the storm and clean and re-sanitize the plant,” the company wrote. “We have informed FDA and will conduct comprehensive testing in conjunction with the independent third party to ensure the plant is safe to resume production. This will likely delay production and distribution of new product for a few weeks.”
Despite the second closure of the plant–which is Abbott’s biggest factory–the company asserts it has an “ample existing supply” of the formula brand EleCare and most of its specialty and metabolic formulas, which will be adequate to meet demand until more product is available.
EU leaders visit Kyiv and pledge support to Ukraine
Four leaders of the European Union visited Kyiv on Thursday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and to pledge military and political support for Ukraine.
The leaders in attendance were French President Emmanual Macron, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. In addition to touring the Kyiv suburb of Irpin where Macon claimed he saw evidence of “war crimes,” the four leaders pledged additional arms and vowed to create a path for Ukraine to eventually join the EU.
The visit from the heads of four EU countries comes at a time when France, Germany, and Italy have faced criticism for continuing to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin and not providing Ukraine with the weaponry the country says it needs to continue its defense against Russian forces.
After holding talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a news conference that the leaders are “doing everything so that Ukraine alone can decide its fate.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz then added, “My colleagues and I have come here to Kyiv today with a clear message: Ukraine belongs to the European family.”

- Tesla raises the price of most vehicles in its lineup for the second time this year in response to global supply chain issues and rising costs of raw materials
- Cosmetics maker Revlon filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a New York court this week; the company holds a debt load of $3.3 billion as of March, per securities filings
