Reports surface of an affair between Elon Musk and Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s wife

According to a report published yesterday by the Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk engaged in an affair with Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s wife Nicole Shanahan late last year.

The affair allegedly prompted Brin to file for divorce in January from Shanahan–his second wife whom he wed in 2018–and resulted in tension between the two men, including Brin selling all of his personal investments in Musk’s companies, according to people familiar with the matter. Musk and Brin were longtime friends prior to the affair, with Musk saying that he has spent time at Brin’s house in Silicon Valley over the years. He also received about $500,000 from Brin for Tesla during the 2008 financial crisis when the company was struggling to increase production.

Per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk ranks as the richest person in the world with an estimated fortune of $240 billion. Brin is currently the world’s eighth wealthiest person, the index shows, with a net worth of $95 billion.

Oak Fire near Yosemite National Park forces thousands to evacuate

A wildfire near Yosemite National Park in California has burned over 14,000 acres this weekend and forced thousands of residents to flee remote mountain communities.

As of yesterday evening, the Oak Fire–which began Friday southwest of the park near the town of Midpines in Mariposa County–had consumed over 22 square miles of forest land and is 0% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) website. Cal Fire also reported that 2,000 firefighters are working to stop the blaze along with aircraft and bulldozers, and are facing conditions such as dry vegetation, steep terrain, and spiking temperatures that make containing the fire difficult.

Due to the fire’s effects, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Mariposa County, which will allow the state access to federal aid to help fight the blaze.

Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard wins his first Tour de France title

The Tour de France concluded yesterday on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, with 25-year-old Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark coming in first place to win the men’s championship title.

This year’s race was Vingegaard’s second attempt at the Tour de France, and his first time winning. Last year, Vingegaard finished second behind Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia, but beat the two-time defending champion in this year’s race with a 3-minute and 34-second lead to start yesterday’s final stage. Pogacar finished runner-up overall in this year’s race, and Geraint Thomas–who won the Tour in 2018–came in third to complete the podium.

Vingegaard’s win makes him the first Danish rider to come in first place at the Tour de France since Bjarne Riis in 1996. However, Riis was ordered to give up his yellow first-place jersey eleven years later, after he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.
