Senate passes $430 billion climate, healthcare, and tax billThe Senate voted 51-50 yesterday to pass a $430 billion bill that addresses tax code reform, steps on climate action, and the cost of prescription drugs. The 755-page bill, called the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to reduce carbon emissions and shift consumers to renewable energy, while cutting prescription drug costs for the elderly and tightening enforcement on taxes for corporations. Originally deadlocked at a 50-50 vote in the Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of passing the bill on Saturday evening. Following Harris’ vote, the bill was passed after Senators engaged in an amendment process that lasted from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the legislation Friday of this week. In a statement following the Senate’s vote, President Biden said, “The House should pass this as soon as possible,” and added that he looks forward to signing the bill into law. |

Israel and Palestinian group Islamic Jihad agree to a cease-fire in GazaAfter three days of cross-border fighting in Gaza that has left at least 44 people dead, Israel and Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad have agreed to a cease-fire. The truce, mediated by Cairo, comes after Israel began launching what the nation called “pre-emptive strikes” against what it believed would be retaliatory rocket attacks from Islamic Jihad following the arrest of Bassam al-Saadi–a leader of the group–in the occupied West Bank. In response, Islamic Jihad fired hundreds of missiles back at Israel and extended its range to fire toward Jerusalem. However, Israel said that its Iron Dome Interceptor shot down the missiles west of the city. According to local health officials, over 300 individuals have been wounded on top of those who died in the attacks. In terms of casualties, it is the most serious flare-up between the two states since an 11-day conflict in May 2021 which left over 200 Palestinians and a dozen Israelis dead. |
