William Ruto wins Kenya’s presidential electionKenya’s electoral commission chairman declared Deputy President William Ruto the winner of the country’s presidential race over Raila Odinga yesterday. This election marked the first time Ruto, 55, had run for president, and the fifth time for Odinga, 77. When announcing the results, the chairman said that Ruto–who ran on a promise to boost the economic prospects of Kenya’s working class–received about 50.5% of the vote to almost 49% for Odinga in last Tuesday’s balloting. However, before Ruto was declared President-elect, four out of the seven electoral commissioners walked out of the main tallying center in Nairobi, saying they couldn’t support the result because of the "opaque nature" of the vote count. Odinga’s campaign has seven days to file a challenge in the country’s Supreme Court, and the court will have 14 days to rule on whether or not to uphold the result. Should the results hold, Ruto will become Kenya’s fifth president. |

Over 2 million infant swings and rockers recalled due to strangulation riskMore than 2 million infant swings and rockers made by the company 4moms have been recalled due to a potential strangulation hazard. In an announcement of the recall–which went into effect yesterday–the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said, “When the swing or rocker is not in use, their restraint straps can dangle below the seat and non-occupant crawling infants can become entangled in the straps, posing a strangulation hazard.” The Commission added that one 10-month-old died from asphyxiation after getting caught in the straps and that another infant of the same age “suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued by a caregiver.” According to the CPSC notice, the recall impacts 2 million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers sold from January 2010 through August 2022 for between $160 and $250 at BuyBuy Baby and Target stores nationwide, as well as online at 4moms.com and Amazon. |
