Attack on Somalian hotel leaves at least 21 dead & over 110 woundedAt least 21 people were killed and over 110 wounded in an attack on the Hayat hotel in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu that first began on Friday night and didn’t end until Sunday. Yesterday, Somali security forces said they rescued 106 people who were trapped or held as hostages inside the hotel since the start of the attack. The Islamic insurgence group Al-Shabaab–which opposes Somalia’s federal government and outside groups that support it–claimed responsibility for the attack. According to police commissioner Abdi Hassan Hijar, the incident ended around midnight local time on Sunday, with 30 hours passing before Somali forces were able to put an end to it. In a message broadcast via its Andalus radio station, Al-Shaabab stated that the attack was in response to previous assertions from Somalia’s former president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed that he would eliminate the group from the country. |

CDC investigating E. coli outbreak potentially linked to Wendy’s restaurantsThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating an E. coli outbreak in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania that has left 37 people sick and 10 hospitalized. In its announcement of the investigation, the CDC said that it is attempting to determine whether romaine lettuce in Wendy’s sandwiches is the source of the outbreak and whether romaine used in the restaurants within the above four states was also served or sold at other businesses. Of the 37 individuals who fell ill, 22 were said to have consumed Wendy’s sandwiches with romaine lettuce in the week before they became sick. While the CDC said it “is not advising that people avoid eating at Wendy’s restaurants or that people stop eating romaine lettuce,” Wendy’s issued a statement saying it is “taking the precaution of discarding and replacing the sandwich lettuce at some restaurants in that region.” |

Daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin's ally killed in a car explosionThe daughter of Alexander Dugin, a Russian philosopher and ally of President Vladimir Putin, was killed in a car explosion about 31 miles outside of Moscow yesterday. In a Telegram post following the incident, Russian law enforcement said that it had opened an investigation into the death of Darya Dugina, Dugin’s 29-year-old daughter. The Russian Investigative Committee said in the post that Dugina was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser at the time of the explosion, and added that a “bomb was found to have been placed under the underside of the car on the driver's side.” While Russia suggested that Ukraine was responsible for the attack, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said in a statement that "Ukraine definitely has nothing to do with this because we are not a criminal state, which the Russian Federation is, and even more so, we are not a terrorist state." |
