Novak Djokovic withdraws from US OpenSerbian tennis player Novak Djokovic says he will not be able to participate in the US Open due to the United States policy requiring foreign visitors to be vaccinated against Covid-19. In a tweet, Djokovic said that he “will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open,” wishing luck to his fellow players, and added that he would “keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again." Following his withdrawal, the US Open released a statement in which tournament director Stacey Allaster called Djokovic a “great champion” and said that the organizers “look forward to welcoming [him] back at the 2023" tournament. Djokovic, 35, won his 21st major title in July at Wimbledon, and his decision to withdraw from the US Open comes amid recent changes by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to its guidelines for unvaccinated U.S. citizens. |

James Webb Space Telescope detects carbon dioxide in an exoplanet’s atmosphereNASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has detected evidence of carbon dioxide in a planetary atmosphere outside of our solar system. According to NASA’s press release, WASP-39 b–the name of the planet whose atmosphere was found to contain C02–orbits a Sun-like star about 700 light-years away from Earth, and has a diameter of roughly 1.3 times greater than Jupiter’s. NASA said the discovery offers evidence that “Webb may be able to detect and measure carbon dioxide in the thinner atmospheres of smaller rocky planets,” and added that previous observations from other telescopes “revealed the presence of water vapor, sodium, and potassium” in WASP-39-b’s atmosphere. The discovery marks the first time that carbon dioxide has been detected on an exoplanet and was made using Webb's NIRSpec instrument, a spectrograph that splits incoming light into spectra resembling barcodes that reveal how the observed objects absorb light. |

California bans the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035The California Air Resources Board voted yesterday to approve regulations that ban the sale of new gas-powered cars and trucks by the year 2035. On top of banning the sale of new gas vehicles by that target year, the board's new regulations would also set interim quotas for zero-emission vehicles beginning with 2026 models. While the quotas also would allow 20% of zero-emission cars sold to be plug-in hybrids, 35% of new cars, SUVs, and small pickups with 2026 models sold in California would be required to be zero-emission vehicles. That quota would increase each subsequent year and is expected to reach 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030, and 100% in 2035, per the board. According to a report from California’s Energy Commission, 12.4% of new cars sold in the state during 2021 were either battery-electric vehicles or plugin-in hybrids. |
