Regal Cinemas parent company Cineworld files for Chapter 11

Cineworld, the world’s second-largest movie theater chain, has filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. to restructure its debt and stay in business.

To support its restructuring plan, Cineworld secured $1.94B in loans known as debtor-in-possession financing. When announcing the restructuring, Cineworld CEO Mooky Greidinger said: “The pandemic was an incredibly difficult time for our business, with the enforced closure of cinemas and huge disruption to film schedules that has led us to this point. This latest process is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen our financial position and is in pursuit of a de-leveraging that will create a more resilient capital structure and effective business."

Cineworld filed the Chapter 11 case in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. The company, which owns Regal Cinemas, operates over 9,000 screens in 10 countries and employs around 28,000 people worldwide.

Apple introduces the new iPhone 14 models & Apple Watch Series 8

At its Far Out launch event, Apple announced the new iPhone 14 series and its four models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to a press release, the iPhone 14 Plus model “boasts the best battery life ever in an iPhone.” While all four of the models come in 6.1- and 6.7-inch display options, the iPhone 14 Pro and the Pro Max come with Apple’s A16 Bionic chip and will feature a “pill-shaped cutout” on the screen that will house the Face ID components and a second circular cutout for the front-facing camera.

The company also revealed the Apple Watch Series 8 and SE, which contain body temperature-sensing capabilities for tracking menstrual cycles and receiving ovulation estimates, as well as the capability to detect whether a car crash has taken place (a feature also housed in the new iPhone 14).

Official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama unveiled at the White House

During a ceremony at the White House yesterday, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden unveiled the official portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Artist Robert McCurdy was commissioned for the president’s portrait, and Sharon Sprung was commissioned for the first lady’s. In a speech he gave during the ceremony, former President Obama said, "When future generations walk these halls and look up at these portraits, I hope they get a better honest sense of who Michelle and I were. And I hope they leave with a deeper understanding that if we could make it here, maybe they can, too. They can do remarkable things, too.”

Since a portrait ceremony didn’t take place when former President Trump was in office, the event marks the first time in 10 years that a sitting president has invited former leadership back for the revealing of the portraits.
