September 26th, 2022

Good morning, and happy Monday! Today is the day to plant the metaphorical seeds you will sow throughout your week…and speaking of, did you know that some studies have shown that plants grow faster when exposed to music? The phenomenon has something to do with the vibrations created by sound waves, and apparently, growth patterns suggest that plants prefer classical to rock. Wild stuff! Anyways, here’s what we have for you:

Japan will reopen its borders to foreign tourists next month

After more than two years of keeping closed borders due to Covid-19 restrictions, Japan will open its doors back up to foreign tourists.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made the announcement during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Per Kishida, tourists will be able to visit Japan without a visa beginning on October 11th, and will no longer need to go through a travel agency to book a visit. The country will also lift its cap on daily arrivals, which is currently set at 50,000.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Japan allowed visitors from 68 countries and regions including the United States to stay for up to 90 days without a visa. In 2019, the country received a record number of nearly 32M visitors. Last year, it received under 250,000. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen has fallen to its lowest levels against the U.S. dollar in almost 25 years, with 1 yen equaling about 0.007 USD.

State of emergency declared in Florida as Tropical Storm Ian approaches

As Tropical Storm Ian approaches from the Caribbean Sea, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency throughout the state.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center expect Ian to strengthen into a “major” hurricane before it makes landfall in Florida mid-week. DeSantis urged residents to prepare for the storm to bring heavy rains, high winds, and rising sea levels. Due to the storm, President Biden postponed a trip to Florida scheduled for tomorrow and also declared an emergency, authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate disaster relief and provide assistance to protect lives and property.

Ian is due to make landfall in Florida less than two weeks after Hurricane Fiona touched down in Puerto Rico and knocked out power to the entire island of over 3.1M people. Since then, power has been restored to over 870,000 customers, according to poweroutage.us.

NFL confirms that Rihanna will headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show

Rihanna will headline the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on February 12th, according to an announcement from the NFL.

In a social media post on Sunday afternoon, Rihanna shared a photo of her hand holding an official league football, which the NFL then shared to their official accounts. On the same day, Seth Dudowsky, NFL’s Head of Music, said in a statement: “We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage. Rihanna is a once-in-a-generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation, and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

The confirmation that Rihanna–who hasn’t released an album since 2016–will perform at the Halftime Show comes days after Apple Music announced that it would sponsor the show instead of Pepsi, who took over sponsorship in 2013.
