Hurricane Ian makes landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Ian made landfall yesterday along the southwestern coast of Florida near Cayo Costa as a Category 4 storm.

Ian’s landfall in Florida comes one day after the storm left the entire country of Cuba without power as a then-classified Category 3. In addition to activating 42,000 linemen, 7,000 National Guard troops, and urban search and rescue teams to aid with relief efforts, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis placed over 2.5M Floridians under mandatory evacuation orders prior to Ian’s arrival, though legally, no residents can be forced to leave their homes. As of last night, Ian had left at least 1M people in Florida without power.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) defines a Category 4 storm as one with sustained wind speeds between 130-156 mph. When a Category 4 hits a particular area, the NHC says that power outages “will last weeks to possibly months,” and that “most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.”

Biden administration announces $1.1B more in military aid for Ukraine

The Department of Defense announced that it will provide an additional $1.1B in security assistance to Ukraine as it continues its counter against Russian forces.

According to a press release from the DoD, the latest package is being provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and brings the total of U.S. aid to Ukraine to approximately $16.9B since January 2021. Per the statement, the new military package includes 18 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated ammunition, 150 Armored High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs); 150 Tactical Vehicles to tow weapons, various types of counter-drone and radar systems, body armor, funding for training and technical support, and more.

The package’s announcement comes amid Russia’s move to annex parts of Russian-occupied Ukraine that held Kremlin-orchestrated referendums and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s call for partial military mobilization of about 300,000 troops.

Aaron Judge ties Roger Maris’ record of 61 home runs in a single season

New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has tied Roger Maris’ American League record of 61 home runs in a single season.

Judge, 30, hit his 61st home run of the season against Toronto Blue Jays’ left-hand pitcher Tim Mayza at the top of the seventh inning in last night's game. Maris set the American League record for 61 home runs in the 1961 season, and until last night, it had yet to be matched. Judge’s feat comes about one week after he tied Babe Ruth’s then-record of 60 home runs in 1927. Of the top five players who have hit the most single-season home runs in the American League–Roger Maris, Aaron Judge, Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Hank Greenberg–three of them did so while playing for the New York Yankees (Maris, Judge, and Ruth).

The Yankees have seven more regularly-scheduled games this season before the postseason begins, with the next one against the Baltimore Orioles taking place tomorrow at 7:05 PM ET.
