Good morning, and happy Monday! Did you know that somewhere out in the vastness of space, there is a planet shaped like a potato? Apparently, researchers discovered the planet, named WASP-103b, at the start of this year and determined that its close proximity to its home star is the reason for its odd shape. Just something fun to think about the next time you pick up a potato at the grocery store! Anyway, here’s what we have for you:

Riots & stampede after an Indonesian soccer match leave at least 125 dead

At least 125 people lost their lives when a stampede and riots broke out after a soccer game in Indonesia’s East Java province on Saturday night, according to local officials.

The match was held at Kanjuruhan Stadium between the teams Peresbaya Surabaya and Arema Malang. Per local reports, the stampede occurred after police tear-gassed spectators who had invaded the pitch following Arema’s loss. Over 300 people were taken to hospitals to treat injuries, with some dying on the way and while receiving treatment, and more than 100 remain hospitalized. As a result, the league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a week and Indonesia’s football association has begun an investigation.

In terms of casualties, the incident marks one of the world’s deadliest sporting occurrences. Following the news, the president of FIFA called Saturday “a dark day for all involved in football” and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo said he hoped it was “the last soccer tragedy in this country.”

Ukraine recaptures control of Lyman days after Russia proclaims annexation

Russian troops have been “completely cleared” out of Lyman as Ukraine reclaimed full control of the city yesterday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Lyman, located in the eastern part of the country in the Donetsk region, fell to Russian forces in May. Since then, Russia had used it as a logistics and transport hub for its military operations in the northern part of Donetsk. The Ukrainian troops’ recapture of Lyman comes less than one month after Ukraine launched its counteroffensive to reclaim pockets of land in the northeastern Kharkiv region in September.

On Friday of last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a signing ceremony at the Kremlin to proclaim the annexation of four regions covering nearly a fifth of Ukraine, including the Donetsk region where Lyman is located. Meanwhile, Both Ukrainian President Zelensky and other Western leaders have condemned the move as an illegal land grab.

Elon Musk to provide Florida with Starlink satellites in Hurricane Ian’s aftermath

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX will provide satellites to help restore internet services in areas of Florida without connectivity after Hurricane Ian, according to state governor Ron DeSantis.

In a news conference over the weekend, DeSantis told reporters that the state is “working with Elon Musk and Starlink satellite. They are positioning those Starlink satellites to provide good coverage in Southwest Florida and other affected areas,” adding that “we are expecting 120 additional large Starlink units to deploy to Southwest Florida.”

Unlike cell phone towers and other internet providers that may lose service during weather events, Starlink’s signal comes from “a constellation of thousands of satellites circling the Earth,” per its website. According to a tweet that Musk posted last week, the company’s Maritime system (designed for boats) “enables high-speed Internet connectivity even in heavy seas & hurricane winds” and also works on land.
