Police arrest suspect in connection to several killings in Stockton, California

An arrest has been made in connection to six fatal shootings that took place in northern California over the past three months.

Police had been searching for a male suspect clad in black who was caught on video at several of the crime scenes in Stockton, CA, where five men were fatally shot between July 8th and September 27th. At a press conference, Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden said that the department was able to identify 43-year-old Wesley Brownlee as a possible suspect “based on tips coming into the department.” McFadden added that Brownlee’s appearance matched the suspect’s description of all-black clothing and that he was armed with a gun when they stopped him in a car around 2 AM local time Saturday morning.

Per McFadden, Brownlee has a criminal history and is believed to have lived in several cities near Stockton. He is expected to be arraigned tomorrow on murder charges.

At least four dead & 61 injured in fire at Iran’s Evin prison

According to Iran’s state media, a blaze that broke out at the country’s Evin prison over the weekend has left four detainees dead and 61 others injured.

Iranian authorities said that a workshop in the facility–which houses political prisoners, among others–had been set on fire “after a fight among a number of prisoners convicted of financial crimes and theft.” Quoting Iran’s judiciary, the country’s official state news agency IRNA said that four of those injured in the fire were in critical condition and that smoke inhalation was the cause of death of the four deceased prisoners.

The incident took place as nationwide protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody after being arrested by the morality police, entered their fifth week. Per IRNA, hundreds of individuals taking part in the protests have been sent to Evin prison.

San Diego Padres beat Los Angeles Dodgers to advance to NLCS

After defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday with a final score of 5-3, the San Diego Padres are headed to their first National League Championship Series since 1998.

The Dodgers–led by manager Dave Roberts–won 111 of their regular-season games this year. Of the last seven seasons, the Dodgers have appeared in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) a total of five times. With the win, the Padres now advance to the NLCS to face the Philadelphia Phillies, who eliminated the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves in the other National League Division Series over the weekend.

The NLCS between the Phillies and the Padres will begin tomorrow night at San Diego’s Petco Park. In the history of the franchise, the Padres have only played in the World Series twice–once in 1984 against the Detroit Tigers and the other in 1998 against the New York Yankees. Both times, they lost.
