Good morning, and happy Wednesday! Did you know that only female mosquitoes bite people and animals? Apparently, females need the blood they drink to produce their eggs, while males only feed on plant juices to survive. Speaking of, a new study just revealed that some people really are mosquito magnets, and it probably has to do with the way they smell. Iran agrees to send more missiles and drones to Russia
Iran has agreed to provide Russia with additional surface-to-surface missiles and drones amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, according to reports from U.S. and Iranian security officials.
A deal between Iran and Russia that set the weapons’ delivery was reached on October 6th when Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, two senior officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, and an official from the Supreme National Security Council visited Moscow. According to an Iranian diplomat briefed on the meeting, Russia “asked for more drones and those Iranian ballistic missiles with improved accuracy.” Ukrainian forces have reported a number of drone strikes in recent days, and the Pentagon confirmed last month that Russia is using such weapons in its offensive measures.
The announcement came one day after drone attacks left at least four people dead in an apartment building in Kyiv, an event that the United States condemned and described as “war crimes.”
Anna May Wong will become the first Asian American on US currency
Late actress Anna May Wong will be the first Asian American on United States currency, according to the United States Mint.
Wong will appear on a new quarter as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program, which was first announced in January and features women who have made contributions in a variety of fields including suffrage, civil rights, government, humanities, science, and the arts. Wong is one of five women chosen, and per a statement from the U.S. Mint, its facilities in Philadelphia and Denver will begin shipping quarters with her face on October 24th. Coins featuring other honorees will start shipping next year through 2025.
Wong, born Wong Liu Tsong in 1905 and whom the Mint refers to as “the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood,” appeared in over 60 movies throughout her career, such as The Toll of the Sea, The Thief of Bagdad, Picadilly, and Shanghai Express.
Australia reverses decision to recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital
Australia has reversed a previous government’s recognition of West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, according to an announcement from Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
Though the Australian Embassy remained in Tel Aviv, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison formally recognized West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2018, a decision which Wong yesterday said “put Australia out of step with the majority of the international community.” Morrison’s decision followed then-U.S. President Donald Trump’s move to shift the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after formally recognizing the latter as Israel’s capital. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has kept the embassy in Jerusalem.
While Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh called Australia’s decision “wise and bold,” Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement that Israel’s government hopes “Australia manages other matters more seriously and professionally,” adding that “Jerusalem is the eternal and united capital of Israel and nothing will ever change that.”

- The New York Yankees advanced to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and will face the Houston Astros in Game 1 tonight after defeating the Cleveland Guardians with a final score of 5-1 yesterday

- Major indexes in the stock market moved higher for the second day in a row, with the Dow closing up over 330 points (Dow +1.12%, Nasdaq +0.90%, S&P 500 +1.15%)
- McDonald’s has partnered with Krispy Kreme to sell doughnuts at nine locations in Kentucky starting October 26th as part of a test; the nine locations are all company-operated units, per McDonald’s, who said the test will help it understand how offering bakery items from Krispy Kreme will impact operations
- Netflix gained 2.4M subscribers in the third quarter to reach 223.09M up from 220.67M in Q2, according to the company’s letter to shareholders it released yesterday; shares of the company (NASDAQ: NFLX) rose by over 14% in after-hours trading
