Chinese President Xi Jinping secures a third leadership term
Chinese President Xi Jinping was named to a third term as head of the Communist Party after the closing of the Communist Party’s 20th Congress this weekend.
In addition to being named to a third five-year term, Xi–who took power in 2012–promoted six of his allies to the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee, the country’s top governing body of which he serves as general secretary. When delivering remarks after taking his third term, Xi expressed his desire for his party to persist with “self-revolution,” reorient the economy toward “high-quality development,” and ensure that China asserts positive leadership in global affairs.
In 2018, Xi eliminated the two-term limit on the Chinese presidency that Deng Xiaoping introduced in 1982 to ensure regular leadership succession and prevent a return to dictatorship seen under Mao Zedong. Zedong served as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party from the People’s Republic of China’s establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976.
Boris Johnson pulls out of UK Prime Minister comeback bid
Three days after current UK Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled himself out of running for the Conservative Party leadership.
Though Johnson resigned from his position as Prime Minister in July, he confirmed in a statement that he had secured the support of 102 Conservative lawmakers to be re-installed as the leader of Britain’s Conservative Party. Still, Johnson said that he wasn’t able to reach a deal with Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt–the other Conservative members in running for the position–and that he had “come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do.” Johnson then added, “You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.”
Following Johnson’s announcement, Sunak and Mordaunt are the two candidates left in the race, with Sunak having secured at least 155 backers of the 357 voting Conservative lawmakers.
Protestors throw mashed potatoes at Claude Monet painting in Germany
Two individuals threw potatoes at a Claude Monet painting entitled Les Meules at Germany’s Museum Barberini before gluing their hands to the wall in a climate-related protest yesterday.
Letzte Generation–the German activist group claiming responsibility for the incident–said in a statement that “the painting was not damaged in the action. Quite in contrast to the immeasurable suffering that floods, storms, and droughts are already bringing upon us today.” The Museum Barberini also confirmed that no damage was done to the painting, which it plans to re-display on Wednesday.
Yesterday’s occurrence isn’t the only time climate protestors have targeted museum paintings. On October 14th, protestors from the group Just Stop Oil emptied tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers at London’s National Gallery, and in May, a man disguised as a woman in a wheelchair smeared cake across the glass protecting Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum. Both paintings were unharmed.

- Hurricane Roslyn made landfall in Mexico as a Category 3 storm north of the village of San Blas, about 90 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, according to the National Hurricane Center
- Iranian hacking group Black Reward said it had released information on Iranian nuclear activities that it obtained by hacking the country’s Atomic Energy Production and Development Company, and declared the action an act of support for Mahsa Amini - see the group’s statement on Twitter here
- Three people were injured when Russian S-300 missile strikes hit a residential neighborhood in Ukraine’s city of Mykolaiv, while Ukrainian counteroffensive forces carried out air strikes on Russian-held facilities in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions

- The House select committee investigating events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021 has issued a subpoena to former President Donald Trump to testify under oath and for records, see the House panel’s statement and subpoena here
- Two employees of the Methodist Dallas Medical Center lost their lives in an active shooter incident on Saturday morning; police later identified 30-year-old Nestor Hernandez as the suspect responsible for the attack and proceeded to detain him, according to a statement from the Dallas Police Department
- A California judge ruled in favor of a bakery owner in Bakersfield who was sued by the state’s Department of Fair Housing and Employment for refusing to make wedding cakes for a same-sex couple due to her religious beliefs

- The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres in Game 5 of the NLCS last night with a final score of 4-3 and will advance to the World Series; the Houston Astros also beat the New York Yankees last night to secure a 4-0 sweep of the ALCS
- Music festival When We Were Young canceled its Saturday lineup on the same day that several of its headliners were preparing to perform due to “dangerous” winds at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds - see the festival’s statement on the cancellation here
- Black Adam earned $67M in the U.S. and $140M in worldwide ticket sales during its opening weekend, marking the highest-grossing domestic box office opening for lead actor Dwayne Johnson as a solo star

- Major indexes in the stock market rose during Friday’s trading session to end the week with gains (Dow +2.47%, Nasdaq +2.31%, S&P 500 +2.37%)
- Pharmaceutical company Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) revealed during an investor call that it intends to sell its Covid-19 vaccine for $110 to $130 per dose and will market it under the brand name Comirnaty when U.S. government supplies run out - listen to the investor call here
- Aircraft manufacturer Airbus is in advanced negotiations with Saudi Arabia to sell almost 40 A350 jets to the country as part of strategic efforts to launch a new airline and challenge other carriers in the Persian Gulf, according to industry sources
