At least 15 dead in attack on Iranian mosque

Gunmen attacked the Shah Cheragh mosque in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz yesterday, leaving at least 15 people dead and wounding dozens of others.

The militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on the Shi'ite shrine, while IRNA reported the death toll and state TV said 40 people were wounded. Elsewhere in Iran around the same time, thousands of individuals took to the streets to mark the 40th day since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody, an event that sparked nationwide protests and led to the biggest movement against the Islamic Republic in over a decade.

The attack comes the same week as Iranian judicial officials announced they would bring over 600 people to trial over involvement in the protests. Since protests began, rights groups have estimated that over 200 people have died from security forces firing live ammunition and tear gas to disperse demonstrations.

Former President Trump’s lawyers accept subpoena from House panel

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump have accepted service of the subpoena issued by the House committee investigating events at the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

At the end of its most recent hearing earlier this month, the House panel voted unanimously to issue a subpoena to former President Trump to provide testimony. The House panel also gave former President Trump a deadline of November 4th to turn over documents, including any potential communications he had in regard to groups that played a role in events at the Capitol and any attempts in the past year to contact witnesses testifying before the committee.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Matthew Sarelson–a lawyer on Trump’s legal team at the Dhillon Law Group–voluntarily received service of the subpoena, which calls for the former president to testify either at the US Capitol or by videoconference “beginning on or about” November 14th.

Wisconsin man found guilty of killing six with SUV during holiday parade

A jury found Darrell Brooks of Wisconsin guilty of six counts of homicide for driving into a holiday parade in the city of Waukesha on November 21st of last year.

According to statements from prosecutors, Brooks drove his Ford Escape into a parade in Waukesha–a Milwaukee suburb–after fleeing a domestic disturbance with his ex-girlfriend. Six people were killed and more than 40 others were injured as a result. Brooks faced 76 total charges in relation to the incident: six counts of first-degree intentional homicide, along with dozens of others related to reckless endangerment. The 12-member Waukesha County jury found him guilty on all 76 counts.

Brooks pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease earlier this year, but withdrew the plea before his trial began without an explanation. He faces a mandatory life sentence on each count of homicide, and a hearing to set a sentencing date is scheduled for Monday.
