Walgreens-backed VillageMD buys Summit Health in $9B dealPrimary care provider VillageMD, which is backed by Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., is buying urgent care provider Summit Health in a deal valued at nearly $9B. According to a press release, Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) “will invest $3.5B through an even mix of debt and equity to support the acquisition of Summit Health-CityMD” and will retain 53% ownership in VillageMD after the deal closes, which it is expected to in Q1 2023. To account for the deal, WBA also raised its fiscal year 2025 sales goal for its U.S. healthcare business to $14.5B to $16.0B, from $11.0B to $12.0B previously. Together, VillageMD and Summit Health will have a presence in more than 680 locations in 26 markets. |

Humans receive transfusion of lab-grown red blood cells for the first timeLaboratory-grown red blood cells have been transfused into humans for the first time ever in a clinical trial in the U.K. The transfusion is part of a trial led by NHS Blood and Transplant and the University of Bristol which manufactures lab-grown blood from adult stem cells taken from donor blood. The stem cells are placed in a nutrient solution for 18-21 days, which encourages the cells to multiply and develop into more mature cells. According to Dr. Farrukh Shah–the medical director of transfusion at NHS Blood and Transplant–the research “lays the groundwork for the manufacture of red blood cells” that can be used to treat patients with disorders that require blood transfusions, such as sickle cell anemia. Researchers tagged the lab-grown cells with a radioactive substance to monitor how long they last in the body. Two volunteers have so far been transfused with the cells, and the same process will now be applied for a trial of 10 volunteers. |

Justice Department announces second-largest Bitcoin seizure on recordThe Department of Justice announced that it seized over $3.36B worth of Bitcoin as part of a fraud investigation involving the Silk Road dark web marketplace. The DOJ said it seized approximately 50,676 Bitcoin from a man named James Zhong last November, which was then valued at more than $3.36B. In a press release, U.S. Attorney Damien Williams said: “James Zhong committed wire fraud over a decade ago when he stole approximately 50,000 Bitcoin from Silk Road. For almost ten years, the whereabouts of this massive chunk of missing Bitcoin had ballooned into an over $3.3B mystery.” According to the DOJ, IRS agents discovered the Bitcoin at Zhong's home in Gainesville, Georgia in an underground floor safe and on a “single-board computer that was submerged under blankets in a popcorn tin stored in a bathroom closet.” It was the largest cryptocurrency seizure in DOJ history at the time, though the Bitcoin recovered is now worth roughly $1.05B. |
