Russian missiles hit several areas of Ukraine following Kherson retreat

Days after its troops withdrew from Kherson, Russian forces yesterday launched a missile barrage on Kyiv and several other parts of Ukraine.

According to a Telegram post from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attack is the largest wave of missile strikes since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Per Klitschko, at least three residential buildings were hit, and within those buildings, at least one person was confirmed dead. Klitschko also reported that while Ukrainian forces shot some missiles down, at least half of Kyiv’s residents were without electricity due to emergency outages in what he deemed was a “necessary step to balance the power system.”

Per Ukrainian officials, missiles also hit Lviv and Rivne in the west, Kharkiv in the northeast, Kryvyi Rih and Poltava in the center, Odesa and Mykolaiv in the south, and Zhytomyr in the north, targeting the country’s energy and infrastructure. Following the attack, officials from NATO member Poland said that a Russian-made missile hit a village about 4 miles from its border with Ukraine on the same day, leaving two of its citizens dead.

NASA’s Artemis 1 moon rocket takes off from Kennedy Space Center

After two mission scrubs and two hurricane delays, NASA’s Artemis 1 moon rocket took off in the debut launch of the agency's Artemis project early this morning.

At 1:48 AM EST, the 32-story tall rocket successfully blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to send its unmanned Orion capsule on a 25-day voyage around the moon and back. NASA had scrubbed launch attempts for Artemis 1 in August and September due to a faulty engine sensor and hydrogen leaks, which the agency then repaired. Hurricane Ian forced the rocket to roll back to its hangar prior to its next scheduled launch attempt, and when it moved to its launch pad last week, Hurricane Nicole led NASA to postpone the launch for two days.

NASA’s intent behind the Artemis project–which is expected to cost $93B–is to return humans to the surface of the moon, a feat they aim to achieve with Artemis 2. The last time the agency sent a space vehicle designed to send astronauts to the moon was in 1972.

Former President Donald Trump announces 2024 presidential campaign

Former President Donald Trump last night announced that he is running again for president of the United States in 2024.

Delivering the announcement in the ballroom of his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said, “I am announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” and followed up with, “Two years ago, we were a great nation, and soon, we will be a great nation again.” The announcement and official paperwork filing comes less one week after results of the midterm elections ensured the Democratic Party maintains control of the Senate, and amid a civil fraud lawsuit the former president is facing in New York state accusing him and his company of overvaluing his assets.

Should Trump win against current President Biden in 2024–who said he intends to run for reelection–he would become only the second president in U.S. history to return to the Oval Office by defeating the man who beat him, following Grover Cleveland in 1892.
