World cup kicks off in Qatar

The 2022 World Cup kicked off at Qatar’s Al Bayt Stadium yesterday before the inaugural Qatar-Ecuador match, which saw Ecuador beat the host country’s team with a score of 2-0.

While the World Cup is typically held in the summer, FIFA–soccer's international governing body–scheduled this year’s tournament during the fall due to Qatar’s climate, which sees summer temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Qatar has drawn criticism from human rights groups around its hosting of this year’s World Cup, with some reports stating that over 6,500 migrant workers have died while building the infrastructure needed to host the tournament (though exact figures are unknown).

Qatar is the smallest nation to host the World Cup, which has cost the country an estimated $220B. According to country officials, roughly 1.2M visitors are expected to attend. FIFA also projects that 5B people will tune in, making the month-long tournament the most-watched sports event worldwide.

Colorado nightclub shooting

At least five people died and at least 25 others were injured after a gunman opened fire inside a nightclub in Colorado Springs over the weekend, according to local reports.

The incident took place just before midnight local time on Saturday at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub that opened in 2002. The suspect was found inside the club and was later identified as 22-year-old Anderson Lee Aldrich. Two firearms were found at the scene, and Aldrich is thought to have used a long rifle. According to Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez, “at least two heroic people” confronted the suspect and were able to stop him from attacking further until police arrived on the scene.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Club Q said the venue is “devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” and thanked the “quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

Former President Trump’s Twitter account reinstated

Former President Trump’s Twitter account was restored after Twitter CEO and new owner Elon Musk posted a poll asking the platform’s users if the account should be reinstated.

Following events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Twitter banned the former president’s account under then-CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey. After the results of the poll were posted, Musk said in a tweet: “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated.” When asked whether he would return to the platform after his account was restored, Trump said he would continue with his platform Truth Social, which he said has better user engagement than Twitter and was doing “phenomenally well.”

The former president’s Twitter profile currently has 87M followers and doesn’t show any new tweets following its reinstatement. His last tweet is from January 8th, 2021, which reads: “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”
