Earthquake in Indonesia

An earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Java has left at least 162 dead and injured hundreds, according to local reports.

The epicenter of the 5.6 magnitude quake was near the town of Cianjur in West Java, a mountainous region home to over 2.5M people about 45 miles southeast of Jakarta. In a statement posted to Instagram, West Java regional governor Ridwan Kamil said that 162 people had been killed and 326 were injured, as of yesterday morning. Local police in Cianjur said that the death toll was likely to increase because people were trapped under the rubble of ruined buildings and landslides, which Kamil confirmed.

Indonesia is subject to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. In February 2022, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed at least 25 people and injured more than 460 in West Sumatra.

No national anthem for Iran's soccer team

The Iranian national men’s soccer team stayed silent during their country’s national anthem before their first game of this year’s World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Instead of singing along to the country’s national anthem–a World Cup tradition–the team stood in a line and stared straight ahead in silence prior to their opening match against England. The team’s silence was said to be an apparent act of defiance against Iran’s government, which has been the target of protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for wearing her hijab improperly.

One day before the match, Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi said the team would “support” the victims who have died in relation to the protests, adding that “the conditions in our country are not right and our people are not happy.” Since protests began in September, human rights activists have said that more than 400 protesters have been killed and over 16,000 others have been arrested by Iran's security forces.

Orion space capsule reaches the Moon

NASA’s unmanned Orion spacecraft reached the Moon yesterday, flying about 81 miles above the lunar surface and sending back a photo of the Earth, according to an update from the agency.

The occurrence marks the first time a capsule has visited the Moon since NASA’s Apollo program 50 years ago. This weekend, Orion is set to surpass NASA’s distance record for a spacecraft designed for astronauts of nearly 250,000 miles from Earth (set by Apollo 13 in 1970) and will reach a maximum distance from Earth next Monday at nearly 270,000 miles. The Orion capsule is set to spend about a week orbiting the Moon in retrograde before heading back to Earth and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on December 11th.

Howard Hu, who leads the Orion lunar spacecraft program for the agency, said that once the safety of Artemis’ components and systems have been tested and proven, NASA plans to have humans living on the Moon “in this decade.”
