Landslide on Italian island

At least seven people lost their lives after a landslide caused by rain swept through a town on the southern Italian island of Ischia.

The landslide began after about six inches of rain fell on Ischia over six hours on early Saturday. The office of the prefect of Naples reported that at least 10 people remained missing in the port town of Casamicciola, and that in addition to the dead and missing, four people were injured and more than 160 were displaced. Following the incident, over 100 firefighters, rescue divers, and earthmoving units were deployed to Ischia to try to clear streets strewn with debris.

The Naples prefect, Claudio Palomba, said that the stream of mud had destroyed 15 homes. According to local sources, nearly half of the houses on Ischia may have been built without the necessary permits, making them unable to withstand landslides and earthquakes.

Covid policies spur protests in China

Protests against zero-Covid policies in China took place over the weekend in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, along with dozens of university campuses.

A fire on Thursday that left 10 people dead in a residential building in the city of Urumqi prompted demonstrations after videos of the incident posted on social media led to accusations that lockdowns were a factor in the blaze. In terms of scope, the protests are the most widespread against the Chinese Communist Party since the 1989 Tiananmen movement. While protests have remained peaceful in most areas, hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in Shanghai yesterday evening.

Nearly three years after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, China is the only major country still implementing lockdown measures. The nation’s zero-Covid strategy has suspended access to neighborhoods for weeks at a time, with some cities carrying out daily testing on residents.

Hotel siege in Somalia

Gunmen from the Islamic militant group Al-Shabaab attacked a hotel frequented by government officials in Somalia's capital of Mogadishu last night, according to Somalian officials.

In a broadcast that Al-Shabaab delivered on its radio frequency, the group claimed responsibility for the attack on the hotel Villa Rose and said it was targeting the nearby presidential palace. The attackers used explosives and guns, according to remarks from Somalian police spokesman Sadik Dodishe, who added that security forces had rescued civilians and government officials from the hotel and launched an operation to remove the assailants. As of last night, there have been no official reports of casualties.

After being elected in May, Somalian President Mohamud declared an “all-out war” against Al-Shabaab. Yesterday’s events come one month after Al-Shabaab orchestrated an attack in which two vehicles exploded minutes apart in the Somalian capital, leaving at least 121 people dead and injuring 333 others.
