China’s nuclear warheads

China is expanding its nuclear force and is on pace to have 1,500 active warheads by 2035, according to a report that the Pentagon released yesterday.

In 2021, the Pentagon’s annual report said the number of Chinese nuclear warheads could increase to 700 within six years and may top 1,000 by 2030. However, Pentagon officials said that China plans to “complete modernization of its national defense and armed forces by 2035,” adding that the country “will probably field a stockpile of about 1,500 warheads by its 2035 timeline” if it keeps the current pace of its nuclear expansions.

This year’s report from the Pentagon comes amid the largest scope of protests that China has seen since the 1989 Tiananmen movement. The country currently has a nuclear stockpile of more than 400 warheads, per the report, which primarily covers activities in 2021. By comparison, the United States has 3,750 active nuclear warheads.

U.S. beats Iran at World Cup

The United States men’s national soccer team defeated Iran’s team with a final score of 1-0 at the World Cup in Qatar yesterday.

Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game in the 38th minute of the match. On the play, Pulisic collided with Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand and suffered an injury to his lower abdomen which required him to be substituted at halftime. With the win, the United States finished second in Group B and will advance to the knockout rounds of the 2022 World Cup.

Iran has never made it to the tournament’s knockout stages, where the initial 32 teams are halved to 16. While the U.S. men’s team has made it to the knockout rounds in previous World Cups, the team failed to qualify for the last tournament four years ago. The United States will face the Netherlands on Saturday.

Oath Keeper leader conviction

Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, and Kelly Muggs, another member of the same organization, were found guilty of seditious conspiracy in connection with events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

While Rhodes reportedly did not go inside the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, federal prosecutors accused him of leading a plot following the 2020 presidential election to wage an armed rebellion to stop the transfer of power. After a nearly two-month-long trial in federal court in Washington, three other defendants in the case–Kenneth Harrelson, Jessica Watkins, and Thomas Caldwell–were found not guilty of sedition, and Rhodes was acquitted of two separate charges of conspiracy.

All five defendants were found guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting for their actions on January 6th. Rhodes faces a maximum sentence of 20 years on the seditious conspiracy conviction, and the other defendants also face 20-year maximum sentences for the obstruction conviction.
