Good morning, and happy Tuesday! Did you hear that the public voted to make the phrase goblin mode Oxford's word of the year for 2022? Apparently, the term is defined as behavior that’s unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms…and it was chosen because it best reflected the ethos and mood of the past 12 months. REAL ID deadline extendedThe Department of Homeland Security yesterday announced that it will extend the REAL ID enforcement date by 24 months to May 7th, 2025. The previous enforcement date was set to go into effect on May 3rd, 2023, and the decision marks the third pandemic-related extension. In a statement published yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security said, “The extension is necessary, in part, to address the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ability to obtain a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card. REAL ID progress over the past two years has been significantly hindered by state driver’s licensing agencies having to work through the backlogs created by the pandemic.” Passed by Congress in 2005 in response to September 11th, 2001, the REAL ID Act requires that federal agencies–including the Transportation Security Administration–do not accept driver’s licenses and identification cards that do not meet REAL ID standards after the enforcement deadline. |

Colombian mudslideAt least 27 people lost their lives in a mudslide caused by rain in western Colombia’s province of Risaralda, according to the country’s president. The mudslide took place on a road in the town of Pueblo Rico and swept in several vehicles, including a public bus that was reportedly carrying 25 passengers. In a tweet posted yesterday, President Gustavo Petro confirmed the death toll and said that three minors were among the deceased. Petro added that the families of the victims “will have comprehensive support from the National Government.” Pueblo Rico had been under a mudslide threat due to rains caused by the La Niña weather phenomenon, per Colombia’s national emergency management agency. Strikes in Russia & UkraineRussian forces fired another round of missiles at Ukraine yesterday after claiming that Ukrainian drones hit two Russian air bases hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian border. Like several of its strikes in recent weeks, Russia’s missile barrage targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with explosions reported in parts of the country south of Kyiv, including Cherkasy, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa. The attack took place as emergency blackouts were due to end, with work to fix previous damage completed. While Ukraine’s air force claimed it shot down over 60 of the 70 missiles, local authorities said missiles struck homes and buildings, disrupted electrical power and water supplies, and left at least two civilians dead. Hours before the strikes, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down Ukrainian drones that had attacked military airfields in the country’s Saratov and Ryazan regions, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. Ukraine claimed responsibility for the attacks and confirmed it used unmanned drones. |
