Good morning, and happy Wednesday! Before we get into it, don't be startled if today’s brief looks a little different. Your eyes do not deceive you. If the email looks a bit sleeker than usual, it's because we made a few improvements. We were in dire need of a glow-up, almost as bad as Steve Carrell in Crazy, Stupid, Love. New Indonesian criminal code

Indonesia’s parliament yesterday approved a new criminal code that bans anyone in the country from engaging in extramarital sex, including citizens and foreign visitors.

The country’s parliament unanimously passed the new laws, which are expected to take effect within three years. Under them, sex outside marriage will carry a jail term of up to a year, and cohabitation between unmarried couples is prohibited. Insulting the president or state institutions is also banned, along with spreading views counter to state ideology, and staging protests without notification. The amended code also maintains a five-year prison term for deviating from the central tenets of Indonesia’s six recognized religions: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.

According to Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Hiariej, the new code must be signed by President Joko Widodo. Even without his signature, the new code will take effect after 30 days unless Widodo issues a regulation to cancel it.

Congressional gold medals

Members of Congress presented law enforcement officers who responded to events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021 with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Medals were given to United States Capitol Police and Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department. To recognize the hundreds of officers who were at the Capitol that day, the medals will be placed in four locations: the U.S. Capitol Police headquarters, the Metropolitan Police Department, the Capitol building itself, and the Smithsonian Institution. When signing the legislation for the bestowment last year, President Joe Biden said that a medal will be placed at the Smithsonian museum “so all visitors can understand what happened that day.”

The Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can bestow, has been handed out since 1776. Previous recipients include George Washington, Sir Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, and Robert Frost.

Trump Organization trial verdict

A Manhattan jury found the Trump Organization guilty of tax fraud on all counts in relation to failing to report and pay taxes on compensation for top executives.

The Trump Organization and its former CFO, Allen Weisselberg, were indicted last year after the Manhattan district attorney’s office investigated the company’s financial practices. Jurors delivered guilty verdicts on a total of 17 counts, including scheme to defraud, conspiracy, criminal tax fraud, and falsifying business records. While the former president was not charged in the case, prosecutors referenced him during the trial regarding his connection to perks that executives received, including company-funded apartments and coverage for other personal expenses.

One of the subsidiaries charged in the case, the Trump Corporation, was convicted of nine counts. The other defendant, the Trump Payroll Corporation, was convicted of seven counts. The Trump Organization faces fines of up to $1.6M at sentencing, which was set for January 13th.
