Top TipsYouTube lands NFL rightsThe NFL announced yesterday that YouTube has landed the exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket beginning with the 2023 season. NFL Sunday Ticket had previously been available in the US exclusively through DirecTV since 1994. Starting next season, NFL Sunday Ticket will be available as an add-on package on YouTube TV and standalone on YouTube Primetime Channels. In a statement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the league has been “focused on increased digital distribution of our games” and that the YouTube partnership represents the NFL “looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans.” YouTube will reportedly pay $2B per year for the rights over seven years. The NFL’s decision marks the second time in less than two years that the league has partnered with a streaming service to air games. The NFL’s 11-year contract with Amazon Prime Video for Thursday night games began this season. |

Winter storm disrupts flightsMore than 2,300 flights were canceled yesterday across the United States due to severe winter weather conditions moving through the country. In addition to the cancellations, flight tracking website FlightAware reported at least 7,863 delays for flights into, within, and out of the U.S. as of 6:30 pm ET yesterday. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Denver International Airport saw the most cancellations, with 25% of their scheduled flights affected. Per FlightAware, at least 1,953 domestic flights have been canceled today, which is expected to be the busiest travel day of the year. The travel disruptions come as over 300M Americans are under winter weather alerts from a bomb cyclone, which describes a rapid drop in barometric pressures and temperatures that the National Weather Service (NWS) has dubbed a “once-in-a-generation” weather event. Per the NWS, some parts of the country may see temperatures of -50F and -70F by the end of this week. |

Deceptive movie trailersA federal judge ruled that moviegoers can file lawsuits against movie studios for false advertising if they release deceptive trailers. The case in question revolved around the 2019 film Yesterday and actress Ana de Armas’ role in it. Two plaintiffs, Conor Woulfe and Peter Michael, each claimed to have rented the film on Amazon Prime after seeing de Armas in its trailer. When the movie ended without an appearance from de Armas, both Woulfe and Michael claimed to have been misled by the trailer. As a result, they decided to pursue a $5M class-action lawsuit against Universal Pictures in January. Universal tried to have the case dismissed, arguing that trailers are entitled to protection under the First Amendment as an “artistic, expressive work.” However, U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson rejected the studio’s attempt to dismiss it, saying that false advertising claims only stand when a “significant portion” of “reasonable consumers” could be deceived. |
