Winter blizzard aftermath

At least 50 people lost their lives in the winter blizzard that moved through the United States between Friday and yesterday.

More than half of the deaths occurred in Buffalo, New York, according to Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz. Per Poloncarz, over 45 inches of snow fell in some parts of the region, with temperatures falling to -22 degrees Fahrenheit when accounting for wind chill. In terms of casualties, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said this weekend’s blizzard was the worst to hit Erie County and its surrounding area since 1977, when a storm killed nearly 30 people.

60% of Americans were under winter weather warnings from Friday to Sunday, and the National Weather Service said that some parts of western New York could see up to nine inches of snow today. Per the NWS, conditions are set to moderate today throughout the country and will continue to improve as the week moves ahead.

North Korean drones cross into South Korea

South Korean military officials said that North Korea flew five drones across their shared border yesterday.

The drones crossed the border around 10:30 AM local time and marked the first occurrence in five years that North Korea entered South Korean airspace. According to remarks from South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff, the “unmanned aerial vehicles” entered the country’s airspace in the border areas around the Gyeonggi province. Per the joint chief of staff, one drone traveled about 14 miles to reach the northern part of Seoul before returning across the border. While South Korea scrambled jets and fired warning shots in response, rounds fired from helicopters failed to shoot the drones down.

The incident came three days after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward the South. North Korea has launched at least 92 missiles in 2022, more than any previous year on record.

Kathy Whitworth passes on Christmas Eve

Former LGPA player Kathy Whitworth passed away on Christmas Eve in the company of family and friends, her partner Bettye Odle confirmed.

The winningest golfer in history, Whitworth achieved her first victory in the Kelly Girls Open in 1962 and went on to become the first woman to amass more than $1M in career earnings on the LPGA Tour. She was the LPGA player of the year seven times in an eight-year span (1966-1973), earned the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average seven times, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.

Whitworth’s 88 victories are the most by any golfer on a single professional tour, male or female. Second behind Whitworth in LGPA Tour titles is Mickey Wright, with 82 victories. Tiger Woods and Sam Snead are the two male players tied for the most victories on the PGA Tour, with 82 each.
