Netanyahu returns to power

Israel's new government was sworn in yesterday, with Benjamin Netanyahu returning as prime minister for the sixth time in his career.

The new government’s first principle published under Prime Minister Netanyahu declares that “the Jewish people have an exclusive and unquestionable right to all areas of the land of Israel,” including the West Bank. While Netanyahu’s newly-formed coalition promises to “advance and develop” settlements there, a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned that Israel’s plans to develop settlements in the West Bank would have “repercussions for the region.”

After four deadlocked elections, Netanyahu was ousted from office last year by a coalition of eight parties united against his rule while he stood trial for corruption. However, he and his Likud party secured the majority of seats in last month’s election. Netanyahu is Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, having held office from 2009 until 2021 and a stint in the 1990s.

Southwest back on track

Southwest Airlines said in a press release that it expects to “return to normal operations with minimal disruptions” today after a week of flight disruptions.

When most U.S. airlines had recovered from setbacks brought on by the winter weather event at the end of last week, a breakdown of Southwest’s computer system used for crew scheduling resulted in the carrier flying about one-third of its scheduled routes over the Christmas travel period. Meanwhile, other airlines such as American, United, Delta, and Alaska imposed temporary price caps on tickets between select cities in markets where Southwest Airlines operates to help fulfill travel demand.

Southwest scrapped over half of its flights yesterday, though as of last night, only 39 of its scheduled routes for today were canceled. Yesterday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the Biden administration will hold Southwest “accountable” if it fails to fulfill commitments to customers for what he called “controllable delays and cancellations.”

Brazilian soccer legend passes

Brazilian soccer icon Pele, who achieved a record three World Cup titles and is regarded by some as the greatest soccer player of all time, has passed away at age 82.

Pele–born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in 1940–had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021, and had been hospitalized for the past month. In his 22-year career, he scored 1,281 goals in 1,367 matches, including 77 during official matches for Brazil’s national team. After he retired from soccer, he served as Brazil’s Extraordinary Minister for Sport as well as an ambassador for UNESCO and the United Nations. Among his business interests, Pele had roles in movies and soap operas, composed songs, and recorded albums of Brazilian music.

In his lifetime, Pele was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee, Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, and joint Player of the Century by FIFA. After his death was announced, Brazil declared three days of mourning.
