Historic day in the House

On the first day of the 118th United States Congress, California Representative Kevin McCarthy failed in three rounds of voting to become the House speaker.

McCarthy needed to secure 218 votes to be elected as House speaker, but received 203 in the first two rounds. While Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio urged fellow Republican lawmakers to vote for McCarthy after the first round of voting, he himself received 19 votes in the second round and 20 in the third. When McCarthy failed to garner enough votes after three rounds, the House adjourned without a speaker. Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, meanwhile, garnered all Democratic votes in each round.

Yesterday’s events marked the first time in a century that the House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker on the first vote. The House is set to reconvene at noon ET today to resume voting.

Damar Hamlin status

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin remains in critical condition after he collapsed on the field during Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin, 24, suffered cardiac arrest on the field following a tackle and had to have his heartbeat restored before he was transported in an ambulance to a local hospital, the Buffalo Bills confirmed. In a statement released yesterday, the National Football League said the game between the Bills and Bengals will not resume this week.

In December 2020, Hamlin created a community toy drive to purchase toys for children in need during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hamlin set an initial goal of $2.5K, and as of last month, the drive had raised over $2.9K. In the 18 hours after his injury, Hamlin’s campaign received over 170K donations. By 3 PM ET yesterday, total donations exceeded $4.5M.

SBF pleads not guilty

FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to all eight counts of U.S. criminal charges yesterday in a New York federal court.

Bankman-Fried’s plea comes one month after FTX co-founder Gary Wang and former Alameda Research (FTX’s sister trading firm) CEO Caroline Ellison pleaded guilty to criminal charges in relation to the collapse of FTX. On top of the eight criminal charges he pleaded not guilty to, Bankman-Fried also faces similar suits by the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 115 years in prison.

Bankman-Fried’s trial date has been set for October 2nd, 2023. As part of his $250M bail package that was set after he was extradited to the U.S. from the Bahamas, the 30-year-old former FTX CEO will remain under house arrest at his parents’ home in California.

In 2023, let’s stop pretending rancid seed oils are ‘healthy’

Many people are switching away from conventional dairy due to a laundry list of valid concerns with the industry. Unfortunately, most plant-based milks are a sad attempt at recreating cow milk, but loaded with artificial flavors, gums, oils, and synthetic nutrients.

Kiki Milk avoids all the common red flags from plant-based alternatives. No gums, no seed oils, no flavors, no synthetic fortification…and it’s one of very few brands on the market certified as both organic and glyphosate-free.

Made for kids but enjoyed by all, Kiki Milk contains healthy fats from coconut for brain health, bioavailable calcium from sea plant Aquamin™ (seaweed) for bone health, and complete protein from hemp and sprouted pumpkin seeds for sustainable energy.
