Top Tips

House saga continues

After making concessions to members of his party, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California lost an additional five rounds of voting for House speaker yesterday.

During the seventh round early yesterday, 19 Republicans voted for Rep. Byron Donalds over McCarthy. Representative Matt Gaetz, meanwhile, nominated former President Donald Trump as speaker in the same round. In round eight, Republican votes were split between Rep. Donalds and Rep. Kevin Hern. After a ninth, tenth, and eleventh round ensued without electing a speaker, the House adjourned until noon today to resume voting.

The eleven rounds mark the longest contest in 164 years for House speaker. Without a speaker, the House is unable to conduct official business. Voting will continue until either McCarthy secures the votes he needs to earn the majority, he drops out for another Republican to claim the speakership, or both parties unify behind a candidate who secures enough bipartisan votes.

Son of El Chapo captured

Ovidio Guzman, the son of former Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was detained in northern Mexico as part of a military operation.

The Mexican National Guard, the Secretary of National Defense, and the Secretary of the Navy carried out the arrest yesterday in the city of Culiacan. The U.S. State Department claims that Guzman, 32, has been involved in his father’s operation since he was a teenager. He and his brother are believed to oversee approximately eleven labs in Sinaloa that produce an estimated 3-5K pounds of methamphetamine per month. Following Guzman’s arrest, security forces attempted to contain a violent reaction by his associates, including shutting down the city’s airport and warning residents to remain indoors.

Mexican forces briefly detained Guzman in Sinaloa in 2019 but released him hours later to avoid potential violent retribution. His father is currently serving a life sentence in the U.S. after being found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering.

Putin orders temporary ceasefire

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday instructed his country's defense minister to order a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine in observance of Orthodox Christmas.

In a statement posted to the Kremlin website, Putin said his decision took into account “the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill,” who leads the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Russian President added, “Based on the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the combat areas, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and give them the opportunity to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on the Day of the Nativity of Christ.”

The Orthodox Church uses the ancient Julian calendar and celebrates Christmas on January 7th. After Putin delivered his announcement, Ukrainian officials dismissed the move as “hypocrisy” and delivered remarks indicating that Ukraine wouldn’t take part in the ceasefire.
