Your Daily Brief

Good morning, and happy Monday! Remember last year’s trend of quiet quitting? Well, there’s a new millennial catchphrase in town, and it’s called rage-applying. Apparently, the term refers to sending out a bunch of applications in hopes of landing a gig that comes with an attractive pay raise. We may be old-fashioned, but isn’t that just called…applying?

In Today’s Brief

  • Senegal: Three days of mourning
  • McCarthy: Elected in 15 rounds
  • Young Thug: Trial starts today

Protests in Brazil

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro yesterday stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in the country’s capital.

The events came one week after the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was on a trip to Sao Paulo and was not in the presidential palace yesterday. While the results of the country’s election were recognized as legitimate by dozens of foreign governments, former President Bolsonaro has raised questions about the reliability of the country’s electronic voting system. Since Lula’s election last year, Bolsonaro supporters have protested by blocking roads, setting vehicles ablaze, and gathering outside military buildings.

As of last night, Brazilian authorities arrested at least 170 people in connection to yesterday's events. While Bolsonaro hasn’t explicitly conceded or recognized Lula’s victory in an address following the election, he agreed to a transition of power on November 1st, 2022.

More California storms

Over 560K homes in California were left without power yesterday amid continued rainfall and high winds throughout the state, according to power outage trackers.

The outages come days after a combination storm of a bomb cyclone and an atmospheric river hit California. A new wave of the storm was expected to move in overnight last night, according to forecasters. In preparation, the NWS issued a flood watch for parts of Northern and Central California, with up to 12 inches of rain expected through Wednesday. Southern California may see up to 8 inches of rain in some parts, per the NWS, with the heaviest portions occurring late tonight and into tomorrow.

The NWS has warned that the recent downpours are likely to overflow rivers and induce flooding in Central California, as well as along the coastlines. Since New Year’s Eve weekend, at least seven people in the state have lost their lives due to weather-related events.

Cuban spy released after 20 years

Ana Montes, a former U.S. defense intelligence analyst who was convicted of spying for Cuba, was released from federal prison in Forth Worth, Texas, after 20 years.

Montes–now 65–worked as an analyst with the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency for 16 years and became of the agency’s top aides on Cuba. During her time there, she admitted to revealing secrets to Cuban authorities such as the identities of four American undercover agents in Cuba and details about U.S. surveillance of Cuban weapons. Montes was arrested in 2001 and received a sentence of 25 years.

According to a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Montes was released early due to good behavior. In addition to being banned from working for the government or contacting foreign agents without permission, she will remain under supervision for five years and will have her internet usage monitored.
