December inflation report

Inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 6.5% in December compared to last year and 0.1% from the month prior, per a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to the Labor Bureau’s report, energy prices rose 7.3% year-over-year, and the index for food rose 10.4% from December 2021 levels. Other categories that saw price increases in the 30 days between November and December include new vehicles (+5.9%), electricity (+1.0%), and rent (+0.8%). “Core” inflation–which removes the food and energy components of the report–increased by 5.7% compared to the same period last year, and rose 0.3% in December after rising 0.2% in November.

Last month’s 6.5% annualized rise in the CPI marks a decline of 2.6% from its June 2022 level, which saw an annualized increase of 9.1% from June 2021. Price categories that decreased in December are gasoline (-9.4%), used cars and trucks (-2.5%), and airline fares (-3.1%).

U.S. cancer mortality rates fall

Cancer deaths in the United States have decreased by 33% over the three decades from 1991 to 2019, according to a new study from the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Per the ACS, cancer-related deaths in the U.S. peaked in 1991. Since then, the mortality rate from cancer has fallen due to a decline in smoking, as well as improvements in early detection and treatments. In its study, the ACS said that the 33% decrease over the past three decades corresponds to “an estimated 3.8M deaths averted.”

The study shows that in 1991, the cancer death rate was 215 per 100k people; in 2019, that figure fell to 146 per 100k people. Lung cancer–of which there are an estimated 230K cases each year–is the leading type of cancer mortalities, at 350 per day. Despite the decline, the ACS study maintains that cancers are still the second leading cause of death in the U.S., behind heart disease.

Special counsel for Biden files

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said he appointed a special counsel to investigate President Biden’s handling of classified documents after the end of the Obama administration.

The investigation will be led by Robert Hur, a former U.S. attorney who served at the Justice Department during former President Trump’s time in office and left in 2021. In his announcement, Attorney General Garland said that Hur would “investigate whether any person or entity violated the law” regarding the classified files discovered in President Biden’s home and at a private office he used after his term as vice president.

Garland appointed Hur after a second set of classified documents was found in the library attached to the garage of the president’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. When speaking to reporters yesterday, President Biden said that the White House is “cooperating fully and completely with the Justice Department's review.”

Modern living screws with your circadian rhythm

So many things mess up our circadian rhythm: lack of exercise, eating at the wrong times…but our exposure to blue light is one of the easiest within our control.

Smartphones, TVs, laptops, tablets, and gaming systems bathe us in more blue light than what is natural.

This light may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a big deal to your body.

It confuses our circadian rhythms about what time of day it is, and interferes with sleep patterns, energy levels, appetite, and more—while increasing our risk of illness!

You can block virtually all harmful light using these glasses from Dr. S Eyewear.

Many brands don’t deliver on their promise, but these effective blue light blockers allow you to use screens later into the evening, without blue light reaching your eyes and screwing up your system.

Grab a pair here. Use them for just one evening and feel the difference!

Wrecked mood and sleep? No thanks!

In the new year, we’re bombarded with many reasons why we should get healthier…

But one thing is often left out that’s sneaky, insidious, and disrupts our natural healthy rhythms. Worse, it’s hitting most of us with impact almost all the time…

…Screens.

To be more specific: the light that our devices put out, which is referred to as “blue light.”

Our screens emit light in short wavelengths, which falls closer to the blue side of the color spectrum…so in the evening it’s not natural, and quite harmful if we’re exposed to too much!

Blue blockers allow you to use screens without screwing up your mood, sleep, eye health or worse. Try a pair and see how you feel.
