US hits debt ceiling

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a letter to Congress yesterday that the U.S. has reached its debt limit and has started to take “extraordinary measures” to ensure that the government can keep paying its bills.

Per the Treasury Department, “the debt limit is the total amount...that the United States government is authorized to borrow to meet its existing obligations,” such as Social Security and Medicare benefits. Currently, the U.S. can borrow up to about $31.4T. According to Yellen’s letter, the “extraordinary measures” the Treasury began taking yesterday to fulfill its obligations include suspending investments in government retirement funds.

Since 1960, Congress has acted 78 separate times to permanently raise, temporarily extend, or revise the definition of the debt limit. In her letter, Yellen stated that Congress must pass legislation to raise or suspend the debt ceiling or risk the possibility of a government default.

Alec Baldwin charged

New Mexico District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced charges against actor Alec Baldwin in the 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of Rust.

Both Baldwin and the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Ree, were charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter after more than a year of investigation into the shooting that occurred on set outside of Santa Fe. In addition to the charges against Baldwin and Ree, Rust assistant director David Halls reached a plea agreement with prosecutors for the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

Hutchins lost her life when Baldwin fired a live round from a Colt .45-caliber pistol during film rehearsals. Baldwin has maintained that he didn’t intentionally fire the weapon and wasn’t aware that it held live ammunition. Involuntary manslaughter is considered an unintentional killing and carries a penalty of up to 18 months in prison in New Mexico, along with a $5K fine.

Netflix founder steps down

Netflix announced during its earnings report yesterday that founder Reed Hastings will step down from his role as co-CEO but will remain on as chairman.

Hastings founded Netflix in 1997 alongside Marc Randolph as a DVD-by-mail service, and the company began streaming in 2007. According to a letter to shareholders, co-CEO Ted Sarandos will remain in his current position. Greg Peters–most recently chief operating officer–will assume the post of co-CEO in Hastings’ place and will also join the company’s board. All three executives have worked together at the company for 15 years.

The shift comes as Netflix moves to diversify from ad-free subscriptions as its main revenue source. The company introduced a new subscription tier with ads in October 2022 and has pushed to build up its gaming and merchandising businesses. The same day that it announced Hastings would step down as co-CEO, Netflix reported 223M paying subscribers worldwide.

The Police were right!

Sting may have been singing to ‘Roxanne’ back in 1981, but in 2023, we all could benefit if we “Put on the red light.”

Two different waveforms called red light and near-infrared light are both healing to the body. One is absorbed by surface tissues and cells, leading to optimized skin health, while the other (near-infrared) is invisible to the human eye, yet penetrates deeper into tissues for recovery and inflammation support.

Get the benefits of both with Joovv’s patented, medical-grade red light therapy device. Tip News readers get a big $50 savings by using code “Tip” at checkout.
