Monterey park shooting

10 people lost their lives following a shooting at a ballroom dance studio in the city of Monterey Park near Los Angeles, California.

The shooting occurred at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio around 10:50 PM local time on Saturday as the city was engaging in celebrations of the Lunar New Year. According to local police, another 10 were injured. Located about seven miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Monterey Park has a population of about 60K people. Per recent U.S. Census statistics, roughly 65% of the city's residents are Asian.

Authorities identified the suspect as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound yesterday when police approached his van. The incident marks the 33rd mass shooting in the U.S. since the start of the year and the deadliest since the Robb Elementary School shooting in Texas that took place on May 24th of 2022.

TSA no fly list leaked

A Swiss hacker known as maia arson crimew blogged that she was able to access the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s “no fly” list from 2019.

The hacker blogged that she discovered over 1.5M rows of data–including the personal information of those on the TSA’s “no fly” list–as a result of Ohio-based regional airline CommuteAir hosting the data on an unsecured Amazon Web Services cloud server. On the list were several publicly known figures, including recently-freed Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout and over 16 of his potential aliases. The identities of nearly 1K CommuteAir employees were also compromised.

In a statement, the TSA said that it was “aware of a potential cybersecurity incident with CommuteAir” and that the agency had launched an investigation. CommuteAir issued its own statement confirming the data’s legitimacy and described the exposed infrastructure as a development server used for testing purposes. Per the airline, the server did not expose any customer information.

Big wave surf contest returns

Hawaiian surfing competition ‘The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational’ kicked off yesterday in Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore for the first time in seven years.

This year, female surfers will compete alongside men for the first time in the invitational’s 39-year history. According to its website, The Eddie has run nine times since its initial competition in 1984, and takes place “only when Waimea Bay offers itself up at 20 feet or bigger.” Competition organizer Clyde Aikau said he was expecting waves to reach 25 to 30 feet by Hawaiian standards–or 50 to 60 feet when measured by methods used in the rest of the U.S.

The Eddie is named after Hawaiian lifeguard Edward Ryon Makuahanai Aikau, who saved over 500 people and became known for surfing waves that no one else would ride. Aikau died in 1978 at 31 years old while sailing a traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe from Honolulu to Tahiti.

The Police were right!

Sting may have been singing to ‘Roxanne’ back in 1981, but in 2023, we all could benefit if we “Put on the red light.”

Two different waveforms called red light and near-infrared light are both healing to the body. One is absorbed by surface tissues and cells, leading to optimized skin health, while the other (near-infrared) is invisible to the human eye, yet penetrates deeper into tissues for recovery and inflammation support.

Get the benefits of both with Joovv’s patented, medical-grade red light therapy device. Tip News readers get a big $50 savings by using code “Tip” at checkout.
