Your Daily Brief

January 26th, 2023

Good morning, and happy Thursday! When you think of pancakes, you probably think of breakfast…but have you ever heard of a spinning ice pancake? That’s exactly what a hiker in Scotland spotted this week, and he captured it on camera. Apparently, as the ice melts, the colder water sinks and creates a vortex that causes the disk to spin. Less tasty than an actual pancake, but interesting nonetheless!

Abrams tanks for Ukraine

President Joe Biden announced that the United States will send Ukraine 31 M1 Abrams tanks to aid in the country’s ongoing conflict with Russia.

Yesterday’s decision was announced after Germany said it would send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and marks a reversal of the Biden administration’s prior stance that the tanks would be difficult to deliver and challenging for Ukrainian troops to operate. While the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriy Yermak, said that the tanks would help determine the outcome of the war, President Biden said the Abrams tanks pose “no offensive threat to Russia.”

Ukraine has lobbied for months for western countries to send tanks, and experts say it may take months for the Abrams tanks to reach the front lines. The tanks will reportedly be procured through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which allows the U.S. government to buy weapons from industry rather than taking them from existing stockpiles.

Meta lifts Trump ban

Meta yesterday announced that it would reinstate former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts after a suspension that lasted more than two years.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, detailed the ban of Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in a statement announcing the decision. Clegg said Meta “took action in what were extreme and highly unusual circumstances” after the former president violated the company’s content rules in his posts around events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Clegg added that if Trump posts further violating content, “the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years.”

Trump announced last November that he will run for president in 2024. Before his suspension, Meta had never blocked the account of a sitting head of state for violating its content policies. The former president has 34M followers on Facebook and 23M on Instagram.

Russian & Belarusian Olympians

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday said that it will explore options for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

In a statement, the IOC said that “no athlete should be prevented from competing just because of their passport,” though reaffirmed that sanctions placed on Russia and Belarus following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine will remain in place. Such sanctions include bans on IOC-recognized events from being organized or supported in Russia or Belarus; prohibiting the countries’ flags, anthems, or identifications from being displayed at any event, meeting, or venue; and banning government or state officials from Russia or Belarus from attending IOC-recognized events.

Regarding athletes, the IOC didn’t name Russia or Belarus explicitly. Instead, it said that all athletes could participate as “neutral athletes” and “in no way represent their state or any other organization in their country” during qualification events and the 2024 Paris games.

The Police were right!

Sting may have been singing to ‘Roxanne’ back in 1981, but in 2023, we all could benefit if we “Put on the red light.”

Two different waveforms called red light and near-infrared light are both healing to the body. One is absorbed by surface tissues and cells, leading to optimized skin health, while the other (near-infrared) is invisible to the human eye, yet penetrates deeper into tissues for recovery and inflammation support.

Get the benefits of both with Joovv’s patented, medical-grade red light therapy device. Tip News readers get a big $50 savings by using code “Tip” at checkout.
