Top TipsUS Q4 GDP reportU.S. gross domestic product increased at an annualized rate of 2.9% in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to yesterday’s report from the Labor Department. Per the report, the rise in fourth-quarter GDP was due to increases in private inventory investment, consumer spending, federal government spending, state and local government spending, and nonresidential fixed investment. The report, meanwhile, showed declines in residential fixed investment and exports. Consumer spending–which accounts for about 68% of GDP–rose by 2.1% in Q4, marking a decline from Q3’s rate of 2.3%. Q4’s growth rate was slower than the 3.2% year-over-year increase in GDP that the U.S. saw in Q3. For the entire year, GDP increased by 2.1% in 2022 overall compared to 5.9% across 2021. Per the Labor Department, 2021’s increase was the fastest pace of GDP growth since 1984. |

National Archives reaches outThe U.S. National Archives sent a letter yesterday asking former presidents and vice presidents to search their personal records for any classified documents or other materials from their time in office. The request comes after classified documents were found in the homes of President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and former Vice President Mike Pence over the past several months. Those contacted included former presidents and vice presidents from the last six presidential administrations covered by the Presidential Records Act (PRA), which governs the official records of Presidents and Vice Presidents that were created or received after January 20th, 1981, and changed the ownership of those records from private to public. Former President Jimmy Carter didn’t receive a letter from the Archives, since he is exempt from the PRA. Though Carter signed the PRA into existence, it didn’t take effect until he left office. |

Violence in the West Bank10 Palestinians lost their lives and at least 20 others were injured yesterday when Israeli forces carried out an operation in the occupied West Bank. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, nine of the deceased were in the Jenin refugee camp after Israeli forces raided the area. Four of the wounded others were in critical condition as of last night. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said it sent its troops into Jenin to “foil imminent attack plans” from Islamic Jihad fighters. In response, the Palestinian Authority said it would suspend the security coordination it maintains with Israel in a shared effort to contain Islamic militants. A United Nations official speaking on the condition of anonymity stated that, in terms of casualties, the raid marks the deadliest single incident in the occupied West Bank since at least 2005–the year that the U.N. started counting casualties there. |
