Pakistan mosque blast

At least 59 people lost their lives and over 150 others were wounded when a suicide bomber attacked a mosque inside a police compound in Pakistan, according to local officials.

The incident took place yesterday during afternoon prayers in the city of Peshawar. The affected mosque is in a high-security part of the city which includes police headquarters and intelligence and counter-terrorism bureaus. Peshawar police chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan told local media that more than 300 individuals were engaging in prayer at the time of the blast. While officials said the death toll was at least 59 as of yesterday evening, the number is expected to rise as some of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition.

Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant attacks since November, which is when the Pakistani Taliban ended their cease-fire with government forces.

Continued Memphis PD fallout

A sixth Memphis Police Department officer has been relieved of duty in connection to the January 7th arrest and beating of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols.

Memphis PD identified the suspended officer as Preston Hemphill, a 26-year-old officer who joined the force in 2018. Based on bodycam footage that the department released on Friday evening, Hemphill allegedly used his taser on Nichols before the beating by five other officers. According to Memphis Police Department spokesperson Kimberly Elder, Hemphill was “relieved of duty” at the same time as the aforementioned five officers. Elder added that the investigation is ongoing and that Memphis PD will “update our social media platforms” once additional information becomes available.

The five other dismissed officers–all of whom are Black–face charges of second-degree murder, assault, kidnapping, official misconduct, and oppression in connection to Nichols’ death. Hemphill, who is White, currently has no criminal charges announced against him.

Child policies in China

In an effort to bolster the nation’s falling birth rate, Chinese health officials announced that both married and unmarried couples in the country’s southwestern Sichuan province will be allowed to have as many children as they want.

Sichuan is home to 80M people. The measure, which will take effect on February 15th, aims to “promote long-term and balanced population development,” according to a statement posted to the Sichuan health commission’s website. The announcement comes after China reported that its population shrank last year for the first time in 60 years.

China instituted a one-child policy in 1979. The policy was replaced with a two-child limit in 2016 and was raised to three for married couples in 2021. Other Asian nations are also facing declining populations, with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warning that Japan is on the brink of not being able to function as a society due to its falling birth rate.
