Top TipsMiddle east quake aftermathThe death toll from earthquakes that struck southern Turkey on Monday has risen to over 20K individuals between Turkey and Syria. Freezing weather conditions and the destruction of infrastructure have hampered rescue efforts in the aftermath of the quakes. According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, 17.1K people are confirmed to have died and 70.3K others were injured from the quake, as of last night. Syrian authorities and state media said at least 3.3K people were killed in both government-held and opposition-held areas. This week’s quakes are the world’s deadliest since 2011, when a magnitude 9.0 quake off the coast of Japan spurred a tsunami that killed roughly 20K people and triggered what came to be known as the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The number of people who lost their lives in Monday’s earthquakes has also surpassed a 1999 earthquake in Turkey that left more than 18K people dead. |

Burt Bacharach passes at 94Songwriter Burt Bacharach passed away at 94 at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, his publicist Tina Brausam said yesterday. Responsible for 73 U.S. Top 40 hits between the 1950s-1980s, many with his collaborator Hal David, Bacharach's songs have been recorded by over 1K artists, including Dionne Warwick, Aretha Frankin, and more. He received six Grammys as well as two Oscars for best original song: one for “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” in 1970, and another for “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” in 1982. He also earned an Oscar for best original score for a nonmusical motion picture for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Born in 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, Bacharach’s music has been labeled as “easy listening” and is noted for its unconventional chord progressions influenced by jazz harmony. Some of his other compositions include “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “This Guy’s in Love with You.” |

SpaceX Starship testSpaceX fired the engines on its Starship prototype rocket system during a “static fire” test at the company’s Texas facility yesterday. The company considers Starship a potential space transportation system, and yesterday’s test brings Starship closer to an orbital test flight launch attempt next month. Per a SpaceX video feed, Starship’s engines fired for approximately seven seconds. The test simultaneously ignited all 33 engines at the vehicle’s booster dubbed “Super Heavy.” SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk wrote in a tweet that engineers turned off one of the engines “just before start” and another engine “stopped itself.” He added: “So 31 engines fired overall. But still enough engines to reach orbit!” No rocket has ever fired as many engines as Starship. The second-most number of engines on a rocket was in the Soviet Union’s N1 rocket, which had a first stage powered by 30 NK-15 liquid-fueled engines. All four launch attempts of N1 between 1969 and 1972 failed. |
