Ukraine war updates

Russia launched a barrage of 36 missiles against Ukraine yesterday, according to Ukrainian officials.

Ukrainian Air Force officials said they shot down about 16 of the missiles, the remainder of which left at least one individual dead and struck Kyiv’s largest oil refinery. Kyiv said the barrage included three KH-31 missiles and one Oniks, which its air defense systems cannot shoot down. The attack comes amid attacks led by Russia’s Wagner mercenary group on the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk. Along with Luhansk, the Donetsk region makes up the Donbas, Ukraine’s industrial heartland that Russia has partially occupied.

The same day as the attack, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said his country–which allowed Russia to use its territory to send troops into Ukraine at the start of last year’s invasion–wouldn’t deploy troops to Ukraine “unless you are going to commit aggression against Belarus,” adding that “Russia is our ally, legally, morally, and politically.”

Atlanta grand jury report

An Atlanta judge yesterday released parts of the report from the grand jury investigating whether former President Trump and his allies interfered in Georgia’s elections during the 2020 presidential election.

Per the report, 75 witnesses testified before the grand jury in a seven-month period, some of which took place in person and under oath. In the report, jurors said that they found “by a unanimous vote that no widespread fraud took place in the Georgia 2020 presidential election that could result in overturning that election.” Jurors also alleged that one or more witnesses may have committed perjury during testimonies and recommended that prosecutors pursue indictments, though the report’s released pages didn’t reveal any names.

While the special grand jury doesn’t have the power to bring indictments, it can make recommendations regarding potential charges. Whether or not to pursue those charges falls to the discretion of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the investigation.

More train derailments

A train containing one car of hazardous materials derailed in Van Buren Township yesterday outside of Detroit, Michigan, according to local reports.

Van Buren Township officials wrote in a statement that the car containing liquid chlorine “was located away from the overturned section” and that “there is no evidence of exposed hazardous materials.” The crash comes less than two weeks after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, OH, prompting evacuation orders following a spillage of chemicals like butyl acrylate, vinyl chloride, isobutylene, and more. The same day as the Michigan derailment, residents of East Palestine held a town hall which representatives from Norfolk Southern backed out of attending, citing security concerns.

In the past four days, two other trains derailed in Enoree, South Carolina, and Houston, Texas, and some Arizona residents were under shelter-in-place orders after a commercial tanker spilled nitric acid when it overturned on the I-10 freeway in Tucson.
