East Palestine illnesses

Residents of East Palestine, Ohio, say they have developed rashes, sore throats, nausea, and headaches after returning to their homes following the February 3rd derailment of a Norfolk Southern train that spilled toxic chemicals.

According to the EPA, chemicals at the site include butyl acrylate, vinyl chloride, glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate, isobutylene, and more. While the EPA yesterday said in an update that “525 homes have been screened with no exceedances for residential air quality standards,” some residents reported irritations on their skin after taking showers and feelings of nausea after being home for 30 minutes.

The reports come around the same time that the FEMA deployed resources to the derailment site. The White House previously said East Palestine was ineligible to receive FEMA resources on the grounds that the town of over 4.7K people requires aid from other agencies better equipped to service its needs, such as the EPA, CDC, DOT, and Department of Health and Human Services.

President Carter enters hospice

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Saturday ended treatment and entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia.

According to a statement from his foundation, the Carter Center, the former president “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.” During his time as president from 1977-1981, Carter presided over the Camp David Accords in which Egypt formally recognized the state of Israel, and he signed a treaty returning control of the Panama Canal to Panama. Meanwhile, the American economy faced elevated inflation and unemployment, and Carter was defeated by Ronald Reagan after serving one term in office.

Alongside his wife, Rosalyn, former President Carter opened the Carter Center foundation in 1982 to promote peace and human rights in foreign countries. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to broker peace deals abroad.

Meta rolls out paid verification

Meta is rolling out a new paid verification subscription service on Facebook and Instagram called Meta Verified, according to an announcement from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Per Zuckerberg, users on Instagram and Facebook will be able to receive a blue verification badge for $11.99 a month on Internet browsers and $14.99 a month on iOS. The subscription will only be available to users 18 years or older, and potential subscribers will need to provide a government-issued ID that matches the profile name and photo on their Facebook or Instagram account to receive verification. Meta will introduce the service in Australia and New Zealand this week, and more countries will follow.

The move comes after Twitter CEO Elon Musk implemented a paid-for verification system called Twitter Blue in December 2022. Blue verification badges on Facebook and Instagram have previously been reserved for accounts belonging to celebrities, brands, and more on a basis of notability.
