Russia and the New START treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is suspending Russia’s participation in the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with the United States.

Putin made the announcement during his annual state of the nation address to Russia’s National Assembly yesterday. Per his remarks, Moscow is not withdrawing from the agreement but is suspending its participation. Under the treaty, both the U.S. and Russia are permitted to conduct inspections of each other’s weapons sites, but inspections have been halted since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the New START treaty is still in force after Russia and the U.S. agreed to extend it through February 4th, 2026.

The treaty, signed in April 2010, limits the U.S. and Russia from having more than 1,550 nuclear warheads deployed on systems like intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missiles launched from submarines, or heavy bombers. It is the only remaining agreement regulating the arsenals of both countries.

Recourse for Norfolk Southern

The Environmental Protection Agency ordered Norfolk Southern to clean up the contamination from the February 3rd derailment of one of its trains carrying hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio.

As part of the order, Norfolk Southern must submit a work plan to the EPA for the clean-up of the site where its train cars derailed and spilled toxic chemicals. Per EPA Administrator Michael Regan, if Norfolk Southern fails to complete any of the actions ordered by the EPA, the agency will conduct the necessary work and then seek to compel the railroad transport company to pay triple the cost.

In its most recent update on East Palestine, the EPA said that “533 homes have been screened with no exceedances for residential air quality standards.” Meanwhile, Ohio is in process of opening a health clinic to address the growing reports of rashes, headaches, nausea, and other symptoms reported by the town’s residents.

Microsoft & Nintendo make it official

Microsoft has inked a 10-year deal to bring Xbox games to Nintendo consoles, according to an announcement from Microsoft President Brad Smith.

In a statement, Smith described the deal as “part of our commitment to bring Xbox games and Activision titles like Call of Duty to more players on more platforms,” adding that Nintendo gamers will be able to access “full feature and content parity.” A Call of Duty title hasn’t been released on a Nintendo console since Call of Duty: Ghosts was released on Wii U in 2013. While Xbox head Phil Spencer announced the deal in December 2022, Smith’s announcement confirms the official agreement.

The deal is part of Microsoft’s efforts to convince regulators to allow its $68.7B acquisition of Activision Blizzard to proceed. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed to block the takeover, and the United Kingdom may require Activision to divest parts of its business for the merger to proceed.
