Top TipsOne year of the Ukraine warToday marks the one-year point of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, during which Russian President Vladimir Putin sent up to 200K soldiers into the country as part of what he called a “special military operation.” While neither Ukraine nor Russia has reported official casualty numbers for troops, the latest estimates from the United Nations show that over 7K civilians have been killed, with 12K injured. More than 8M Ukrainians have fled across Europe. Since the war began, the U.S. has committed nearly $80B in aid to Ukraine, including humanitarian, financial, and military support. Meanwhile, the global economy continues to face shortages of grain, fertilizer, and energy due to the conflict. Yesterday, the UN General Assembly approved a resolution calling for Russia to withdraw its forces. It passed with 141 countries voting in favor, 32 abstaining, and 7 countries voting against it, including Russia. UN General Assembly resolutions don’t have force in international law; binding enforcement actions are up to the UN Security Council, where Russia has unilateral veto power as a permanent member. |

Air fryer recallNearly 2M Cosori air fryers have been recalled in the U.S. after reports of the product overheating and catching fire, according to federal safety regulators. In a notice published yesterday, the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) wrote: “[Cosori] has received 205 reports of the air fryers catching fire, burning, melting, overheating, and smoking. These include 10 reports of minor, superficial burn injuries and 23 reports of minor property damage.” The CPSC noted that the cause of the problem is a wire connection prone to overheating and that customers should “immediately stop” using the affected air fryers. Cosori wrote on its recall website that the incident occurs in “extremely rare circumstances” and that its products “are in full compliance with established industry standards.” The air fryers were reportedly sold in brick-and-mortar and online retailers from June 2018 through December 2022. About 250K units in Canada and 21K in Mexico have also been recalled. |
