Southern California storms

More than 120K people in California were left without power this weekend amid storms that brought snow, rain, and hail to the state.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm was “one of the strongest” to ever hit southwest California. Northern and eastern parts of Los Angeles County such as the Santa Clarita Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains received several inches of rain and snowfall in elevations as low as 1K feet. As of yesterday, Interstate 5–the main thoroughfare that runs north and south on the West Coast–remained closed due to snow and ice in the Tejon Pass through the mountains north of Los Angeles, per the California Department of Transportation.

According to the NWS, a low-pressure system driven from the Arctic was responsible for the conditions, which are unusual for Southern California. So far there have been no reports of any deaths or critical injuries due to storms in the state.

Mega prison opens in El Salvador

The first group of 2K alleged gang members in El Salvador has been transferred to a newly-opened “mega prison” as part of President Nayib Bukele’s crackdown on crime.

The transfer comes after a wave of anti-gang operations in which police swept up more than 64K people. Bukele declared a "state of exception” in March 2022 and empowered El Salvador’s government to crack down on suspected gang members by suspending civil liberties, such as no longer requiring warrants for arrests and granting the government access to citizens’ communications. According to pictures taken on-site during the transfer, inmates were led to the facility barefoot and in shackles, with no clothing other than white shorts.

According to President Bukele, the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism–the name of the prison where the inmates were transferred–is comprised of eight buildings that will eventually hold 40K people.

Israel-Palestine talks

Israeli and Palestinian officials convened yesterday in Jordan and pledged to de-escalate violence between the two countries.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting, Israeli and Palestinian officials said that they would work closely to prevent “further violence” and that they “reaffirmed the necessity of committing to de-escalation on the ground.” As part of the deal, Israel committed to not discussing any new plans to expand West Bank settlements for the next four months and to not allow any new outposts for the next six months.

The last time a similar meeting took place between Israeli and Palestinian negotiators was in 2012. Yesterday’s de-escalation talks came the same day as Israeli settlers set dozens of cars and homes on fire in the northern West Bank, leaving one person dead and injuring four others. The attacks were reportedly prompted after two settlers were killed by a Palestinian gunman.

Dinner with a side of chemicals?

You’ve heard of Teflon®, the ‘miracle’ non-stick synthetic chemical, which became popular in the 1960s for its ‘slick’ ability to repel other substances. But did you know it’s one of the most dangerous chemicals allowed in consumer products? And it’s still found in over 95% of non-stick cookware on the market! When it gets to very high temperatures, Teflon® releases toxic fumes at a molecular level.

Enter – Caraway Home. Caraway set out to build non-stick, ceramic-coated cookware that’s actually safe for you to use. Whether you’re a weeknight chef looking to amplify your meals, or making a healthy swap to protect your loved ones from harmful emissions, Caraway is built for function, longevity, and safety.
