Russia fines Wikipedia

A Russian court yesterday fined Wikipedia’s parent company, the Wikimedia Foundation, 2M rubles (about $27K) for failing to delete alleged “misinformation” about the Russian military from Wikipedia.

After Russia invaded Ukraine last year as part of what Russian President Vladimir Putin called a “special military operation,” Russia introduced new laws restricting what people can report about the conflict. To enforce the laws, the country has fined or blocked websites that spread information that the Kremlin deems to be contradictory to its official message. Including yesterday, Russia has fined Wikimedia a total of three times since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine (the foundation was previously fined in April and November of last year).

In a press release after the November fine, Wikimedia wrote that it “will challenge any attempts to control and restrict this access to knowledge,” and called Russian-language Wikipedia “a crucial second draft of history, written by and for Russian speakers around the world.”

Nigerian presidential elections

Bola Tinubu from Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress party has taken the lead in the country’s presidential election that took place this past Saturday.

While votes are still being counted, preliminary results from about three-quarters of the country’s states show that Tinubu is currently in the lead with 39%. The People’s Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar is second with 31%, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party is in third place with 20%. To be declared president-elect, a candidate needs to have the most votes nationwide and at least a quarter of ballots cast in 25 of Nigeria’s 36 states, plus Abuja. 23 states have declared their results so far.

The tally comes as Abubakar and Obi’s parties are calling for a rerun of the election, citing attacks and voter intimidation at polling sites, technical issues with voter ID technology, and late starts by election officials that prevented voting from taking place as scheduled in some areas.

Artificial sweetener study

A new study from the Cleveland Clinic found that the artificial sweetener erythritol has been linked to a higher risk of strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots.

Researchers reportedly analyzed over 4K people in the study, which was published in Nature Medicine. The results showed that those with higher levels of erythritol in their blood were at an elevated risk of experiencing “major adverse cardiovascular events.” The findings also revealed that erythritol made platelets easier to clump together and form blood clots. Diabetics and other people with an increased risk of heart disease were also found to be twice as likely to experience a heart attack or stroke if they had high levels of erythritol in their system.

Commercial erythritol is produced by fermenting corn. Yesterday’s study comes after a January 2023 scientific review was published in PubMed which referenced studies that “indicate positive association between plasma erythritol and obesity and cardiometabolic disease.” However, the authors of the PubMed review state “it is unlikely that dietary erythritol is mediating these associations” and point to correlating dysregulated pathways in the subjects.
